High entropy alloys (HEAs) are provided, which exhibit a high magnetic entropy change over a large temperature range, as well as methods for making HEAs. The invention also provides HEAs that exhibit notable magnetostriction at room temperature, and alloying methods for producing them. The materials and methods of the invention may be used, for example, in solid-state refrigeration apparatus and methods, as well as in transduction devices and energy harvesting applications.

Magnon excitation and detection systems, apparatus, and methods are provided. The systems and apparatus may include magnon exciters and magnon detectors. The systems and apparatus are used in accordance with methods for exciting and detecting magnons.

The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is used to capture variations in magnetic permeability and magnetization to determine the presence of sensitization. MOKE-magnetometry-based systems and apparatus may be used to provide in-field magnetic measurements, and may be particularly useful in methods for assessing changes in composition, crystal structure, and grain size in magnetic materials.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are provided, which exhibit hard magnetic properties, including increased saturation magnetization, improved coercivity, and thermal stability at temperatures exceeding about 200° C. Methods of making the HEAs are also provided, as well as methods for using the HEAs, particularly in extreme environments.

A grass catcher having a monocoque container which is downwardly tapered from its rear end to its front end, the rear end being open and larger in size than the front end. A front wall closes off the front end. A continuous material sheet forms a flat top wall, a side wall, and a flat bottom wall. The side wall has a series of adjacently aligned, frustum segments. This side wall extends downward from the top wall which is fixedly attached to the front wall and a flat side wall. The side wall is fixedly attached directly to the front and bottom walls. The container has a plurality of hole patterns, which, in combination with the shape of the container, facilitate air flow through the grass catcher and thus the flow of loose grass clippings through the grass catcher.

Active-mode sensors are provided, and may be used to detect air, water, and sediment interfaces. Systems and methods for sensing air, water, and sediment are also provided. The sensors are robust and withstand forces due to moving or shifting water and sediment.
