A communications connection comprises intermediate connection points () connected by a non-conducting communications link (), with conversion equipment in one or both intermediate points for converting communications between electrical and non-electrical carriers, and each being arranged to be powered from the respective ends (). If a metallic path () is present between the two intermediate points, the system can be arranged to use this for a limited connection service in the event of loss of electrical power to one or both of the intermediate points ().

Power distribution for telecommunications system

A power injection system () for delivering electrical power to one or more communications connections in a network, is responsive to a monitor () which measures the amplitude of signals present on the line to control an injector () such that it delivers a line voltage which, combined with the measured signal amplitude complies with a predetermined limit for the line.

Delivery of electrical power

A token issuer and an authentication device provide an identity confirmation device. A token issuer is programmable by a central identity provider to issue certification tokens for use in e-commerce whereby transactions can be certified with suppliers without need for additional communication with a central server.

Trust tokens

In order to allow files structures at different locations to be synchronized, a folder tree descriptive of each set of folders is created and stored at a plurality of locations. On subsequent interconnection of the two locations a new tree is created for each location and the earliest of the old trees is used to determine which files, folders or paths of the two locations have been amended. This enables deletion or re-synchronization of files between the two locations even though files may have been worked on at different locations and at different times.

File synchronisation

An interface for a World Wide Web (WWW) browser is described which recognizes HyperText Markup Language (HTML) links embedded in WWW pages. Normally, such links are highlighted on a graphics screen and are activated using a pointing device such as a computer mouse. When each HTML link is recognized by the interface, it is assigned an identifier which can be selected by a user of a system incorporating the interface by means defined by the interface other than a mouse, for example by a keypad.
