A portable information handling system includes a touch function row between a keyboard and a display that accepts touches at plural locations to initiate an on-screen-display user interface for a selected of plural functions based upon a touch location. The touch locations may be identified with illumination points and unlabeled as to an associated function since the function associated with a touch location is presented at the display. Alternatively, a secondary display presents function key images at the touch function row. The on-screen-display user interface presents different control interfaces when touches include multiple fingers and drag versus non-drag inputs.

A haptic touchpad may include a seamless layer of glass; a touchpad assembly, including: a capacitive touch printed circuit board (PCB) operatively coupled to a bottom side of the seamless layer of glass via a first adhesive; a contact foil operatively coupled to the bottom surface of the capacitive touch PCB via a second adhesive; a piezoelectric element array operatively coupled to a bottom side of the contact foil to receive an applied mechanical stress; and a controller of the information handling system operatively coupled to the piezoelectric element array to: receive electric actuation signals from the piezoelectric element array placed under the mechanical stress via the contact foil; and send an electrical response signal to the piezoelectric element array to cause the piezoelectric element array to generate haptic feedback; and a unibody C-cover support frame to support the touchpad assembly and the seamless layer of glass.

A hinge assembly for a portable information handling system (IHS) includes an upper hinge axle coupled to a lid of the portable IHS, a lower hinge axle coupled to a base of the portable IHS, and a hinge cover encompassing the upper and lower hinge axles. A fulcrum foot provided on the hinge cover contacts a support surface when the lid is rotated to a first usage angle, and continues to support the portable IHS on the support surface as the lid is rotated further through a wide range of usage angles. When the lid is rotated beyond the first usage angle, a rear portion of the base lifts away from the support surface, and conceals an increasing greater portion of a lower bezel surrounding a display screen of the portable IHS. To reduce the amount of lift, internal components of the hinge assembly are offset by an angle &#x3b8; of about 10&#xb0;-20&#xb0; from a vertical axis.
