In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a housing and an image sensor that is coupled to the housing and has a field of view. The apparatus also includes a non-imaging optical system coupled to the housing and disposed outside of the field of view of the image sensor. The non-imaging optical system can output diffuse light in a set of directions to a surface to produce scattered light. The image sensor and the non-imaging optical system are collectively configured such that during operation, the image sensor receives at least a portion of the scattered light.

Methods and apparatus for an optical system outputting diffuse light and having a sensor

In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a housing and an image sensor that is coupled to the housing. The apparatus also includes a non-imaging optical system coupled to the housing that can output light to a surface and produce a scattered light component and a specular reflected light component. The image sensor and the non-imaging optical system are collectively configured in such a manner that during operation, the image sensor receives from a surface (1) at least a portion of the scattered light component and not the specular reflected light component or (2) at least a portion of the scattered light component having a magnitude and at least a portion of the specular reflective light component having a magnitude less than the magnitude of the portion of the scattered light component.

Fixed focus microscope with a removable mount for a mobile phone camera

A fixed focus microscope objective lens designed for high magnification viewing of homogenous specimens. The fixed focus microscope objective comprises a last surfacewhich serves as a specimen mount and enables the device to operate in focus without the need for focus adjustors in the microscope system. The user can observe specimens by simply placing a sample of the specimen on the fixed focus objective lens surface. There is no need for preparing a microscope slide, focusing, or positioning the specimen. By eliminating focus and stage adjustors the microscope becomes both simpler to operate and less expensive to manufacture. A fixed focus microscope objective lens can be used by novice microscopists to obtain high quality images at high magnification for nominal cost, and can convert a common video camera into a high quality video microscope.

Optical transceivers include a diffractive optical element (DOE) attached to a surface of a prism or other optical support. The DOE is configured to direct an input optical signal to a planar or curved reflective surface, or receive an output optical signal from the planar or curved reflective surface at angles greater than a critical angle in the prism. In some examples, the optical support includes one or more curved reflective surfaces and the DOE is a hologram. Such optical transceivers include a reflective surface that is rotatable with respect to the DOE, or with respect to a selected communication direction and the DOE for selection of a transmission or reception direction. The optical supports of such optical transceivers can be mounted to a window, and include a reflective region configured to total internally reflect optical signals. Selection of a communication direction is based on a rotation of the rotatable reflective surface.

Pointable optical transceivers for free space optical communication

Optical transceivers include a diffractive optical element (DOE) attached to a surface of a prism or other optical support. The DOE is configured to direct an input optical signal to a curved reflective surface or receive an output optical signal from the curved reflective surface at angles greater than a critical angle. In some examples, the optical support includes one or more curved reflective surfaces and the DOE is a hologram. Such optical transceivers can be provided with optical mounts configured for attachment to a building window.

Hybrid optical transceivers for free space optical communication

An optical fiber assembly includes an optical fiber and ferrule. The ferrule's face is partitioned into several regions. Optical elements can be formed on the regions to diffract light incident on the ferrule. Alternatively, the ferrule's face may have several reflective facets. Light incident on the end of the optical fiber propagates to a communications detector. Light incident on the ferrule's face is redirected to tracking detectors, each arranged to receive the redirected light from a preselected region of the ferrule. The output signals of the tracking detectors are used to adjust the alignment between the incident light and the assembly. Alternatively, tracking fibers or a quadrant cell may be used to directly receive light that would otherwise be incident on the ferrule's face.

Free space optical system with multiple function detectors

An apparatus for a free space optical communication system includes an element having a front surface and a back surface. A holographic optical element (HOE) is disposed to receive a light signal from the free space optical communication system, and to angularly direct the light signal, having a certain wavelength, towards one of the surfaces of the element to allow the light signal to propagate between the front and back surfaces of the element via total internal reflection. The internally reflected light signal eventually converges and is received at an optical detector circuit. At the same time, light having other wavelengths, including visible background light, passes through the HOE, thereby giving the apparatus an appearance of being transparent and unobtrusive.
