Embodiments of the present invention may include an apparatus and method for ruggedizing a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Embodiments of the present invention may be configured to impart little or no stress to the LCD, while also shielding the LCD from adverse effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI). A conductive adhesive, a metal frame, and a assembly support panel may be used to provide a electrically conductive path for controlling the EMI. A protective glass may be used to shield the LCD from environmental effects and a heater glass allows for operation of the LCD in different thermal conditions.

Low stress mounting support for ruggedized displays

The represent invention relates to a method of backlighting a liquid crystal display which includes heating a fluorescent lamp with an external heating element which does not contact the lamp. The heating step may be accomplished by passing a current through a resistive material. The resistive material may be coated on to a surface. The present invention also relates to a backlighting system with a fluorescent lamp and an external heating element which does not contact the fluorescent lamp. The heating element may be a resistive material coated on a substrate. The present invention also relates to a portable display device element includes a liquid crystal display, a fluorescent lamp to act as a backlight, a heating element which does not contact the fluorescent lamp and optionally including reflectors, diffusers, and optical enhancement films. The heating element may be a resistive material coated on a substrate.

Heating element for fluorescent lamps

A backlight liquid crystal display including a collimated backlight for illuminating a display panel having a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between rear and front polarizers, the panel including an optical refracting film and a diffuser laminated adjacent the front surface of the panel. The refracting film and light scattering diffuser may be either exterior or interior the front polarizer, but on the viewer side of the liquid crystal layer. The optical system of the refracting faceted film along with the diffuser maintains the resolution of the display, improves the contrast ratio over a wide range of viewing angles, reduces its ambient light reflectively, reduces color shifting, substantially eliminates inversion, and enlarges the effective viewing zone of the display.
