An improved system and method for address entry are provided for a user to enter a plurality of addresses into a recipient field associated with an electronic communication. According to embodiments described herein, a first user input is received. The first user input is indicative of a first recipient for an electronic communication, where the first recipient includes a first name and a last name. A second user input is received in addition to the first recipient while the electronic communication is currently addressed to the first recipient. The second user input is indicative of a portion of a second recipient for the electronic communication. An auto-complete list of one or more suggested recipients that correspond to the second user input is displayed while the electronic communication is currently addressed to the first recipient. The one or more suggested recipients do not include the first recipient.

System and method for improved address entry

Displaying a map in a mobile communication device. Geographic coordinate information for a location of an address in a contact is determined. A user context for the mobile communications device is also determined. A request for a table of contents of available map data without the map data with the geographic coordinate information of the location as input is sent and the table of contents of available map data is received. A subset of map data comprising less data than is listed in the table of contents for the location corresponding to the geographic coordinate information is selected based on the table of contents of available map data and the user context. The subset of the map data is requested and the map with the subset of the map data is caused to be rendered in the display.

Methods and apparatus for associating mapping functionality and information in contact lists of mobile communication devices

An improved system and method for address entry are provided for a user to enter a plurality of addresses into a recipient field of an electronic communication composition application. According to embodiments described herein, an auto-complete list is generated based on an input indicative of at least a portion of a current recipient address and is additionally based on a previously entered recipient address, and the auto-complete list is then displayed.

A method, apparatus and system for reducing download of redundant attachments to a communication device from a server is provided. An identifier of attachment to a message, for transmission from the server to the communication device, is compared with identifiers of attachments already stored in a memory at the communication device. The communication device is caused to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory if a match is found between the identifier and the identifiers of attachments already stored in the memory.

Method, apparatus and system for reducing download of redundant attachments

A mobile communication device stores a contact list which includes a plurality of contacts, and identifies a user selection to map a location of a selected contact. In response, the device reads an address from an address field of the selected contact, sends to an address geocoding server the address with a request for latitude and longitude coordinates, and receives from the address geocoding server the coordinates. When map rendering data corresponding to the coordinates is cached in memory, the device renders a map based on the map rendering data. Otherwise, the device sends to a map server the coordinates with a request for context-filtered map data, which is based at least in part on a user context independent of the location of the device. The device receives the context-filtered map data, and renders a map based on the received context-filtered map data.

A wireless communications device can be triggered by a user in a duress situation to provide to a predetermined recipient, or to a monitoring service, a duress message containing emergency-response information, such as GPS coordinates, a photograph and/or an audio clip to facilitate an emergency response to the duress situation. The wireless device can periodically send follow-up duress messages to provide updated GPS data, photos or other information. The wireless device monitoring can also reply to specific queries from the monitoring service to provide requested information that would be most useful to the recipient attempting to coordinate an emergency response. In the event that the device is outside data packet coverage, the duress message can be transmitted using an alternate mode of communication such as SMS or MMS. If no mode of communication is available, the device stores the duress message until communications are possible.

Enhanced handling of duress situations

An apparatus and method for controlled sharing of personal information are provided which allow confident and accurate indications of, and alterations to, the level of personal information being shared by all personal information sharing capable (i.e. source) applications of a portable electronic device. Controlled personal information sharing is achieved through the application of sharing modes which are enabled through the cooperation of a plurality of applications which share personal information, a detecting module which detects requests to control the continued sharing of personal information and a controlling module controls the continued sharing of personal information by the plurality of applications. A universal sharing toggle is provided which allows a user of a portable electronic device to control the sharing of all personal information by the device. A personal information sharing icon is provided which gives a user of a portable electronic device a quick indication of the present state of the device's sharing mode. In cooperation, the universal sharing toggle and personal information sharing icon provide a user of a portable electronic device with a highly useable and efficient mechanism to control the amount of privacy provided by the device by restricting or allowing personal information to be shared.

Apparatus and method for controlled sharing of personal information

A system and methods for adding a personal touch to auto-reply email messages is presented herein. The system and method involve a user enabling a personalized auto-reply feature in their email client, the email client communicating such enablement to a related email server, the email server receiving an email message for the user, the email server determining personal identifier of the sender of the email message and the email server sending a personalized auto-reply using the determined personal identifier to compose and send an auto-reply with a personal touch. The email server may determine the personal identifier through searching one of the user's address book or a global address list for an address entry having the reply address found in the received message's header or the email server may search the body of the received email message to determine personal identifier.

A method and apparatus for provisioning a third party mobile device emulator from desktop provisioning software, the method having the steps of: designating a common file space between the third party mobile device emulator and the desktop provisioning software; writing files to the common file space from one of the third party mobile device emulator and the desktop provisioning software; and reading the files from the other of the third party mobile device emulator and the desktop provisioning software.

A system and methods are provided whereby a user of a mobile device can adaptively switch the mobile device from speakerphone mode to handset mode without needing to look at the mobile device or without the need to activate a button or key sequence. In a preferred embodiment, modules are provided in the mobile device which allow for the detection of a voice conversation, the sampling of the user's voice and the switching between the two modes of operation. If the user's voice volume is above a certain threshold the mobile device operates in handset mode. If the user's voice volume is below a certain threshold the mobile device operates in handset mode. Through the inclusion of the embodiments described herein, a mobile device can allow a user to safely and quickly switch from one mode of operation to the other without a requirement for additional hardware in the mobile device.

A method and system for coordinating a specific subscribed service on a mobile communication device are provided. In accordance with one embodiment, this is provided a method for coordinating a specific subscribed service on a mobile communication device, comprising: registering the mobile communication device with a node; transmitting identification information to the node, the identification information including an identifier of a device, an identifier of a vendor, an identifier of a user, and an identifier of a subscribed service; receiving information from the node in response to the transmitting; and enabling the specific subscribed service in accordance with the received information.

Method and system for customizing a user interface of a mobile device

In one illustrative example, a method of providing mapping functionality in a contact list of a mobile communication device comprises the acts of providing a contact list organizer function in the mobile communication device for use in organizing a plurality of contacts of a contact book or list; identifying, through a user interface of the mobile communication device, a user input request to map a location of a selected one of the contacts of the contact list; and causing a map corresponding to the location to be visually displayed in a display of the mobile communication device in response to the user input request. In another illustrative example, the method comprises the acts of causing a map of a location to be visually displayed in a display of the mobile communication device; receiving a user input request to associate the location of the map with a contact in a contact book or list of the mobile communication device; and storing location data corresponding to the location in one or more location fields of the contact in response to the user input request. In one embodiment, the contact list is part of an address book having a plurality of address book contacts.
