A launcher includes an impulse cylinder connected to a launch tube. An impulse piston, disposed within the impulse cylinder has a water side and an air side. The water side is in fluid communication with the launch tube. The air side is in fluid connection with a high pressure air source. A shaft connects a hydraulic cylinder is to the impulse cylinder. The shaft connects a hydraulic piston to the impulse piston. A control valve is connected to the hydraulic cylinder and controls movement of the hydraulic piston, which in turn controls movement of the impulse piston. Upon launch, the control valve allows movement of the hydraulic piston which allows movement of the impulse piston, providing water behind a projectile.

Internal countermeasure launcher having a hybrid ram ejection pump

A pneumatic launcher has a plenum chamber section, an intermediate chamber section and a launch tube section connected together in a generally linear arrangement. The plenum chamber section defines a plenum chamber that has a closed end and an open end. The intermediate chamber section has aft and forward rupture disks consecutively arranged to define an intermediate chamber. The plenum chamber is pressurized with a pressurized gas to a design plenum pressure and the intermediate chamber is pressurized with a pressurized gas to pressure that is about one-half the design plenum pressure. The intermediate chamber is then depressurizing to produce a pressure imbalance between the plenum and intermediate chambers that causes said aft and forward rupture disks to rupture. As a result, pressure equilibrium occurs between the plenum chamber and launch tube thereby discharging the fluid and projectile from the interior of the launch tube.

Pneumatic launcher system and method for operating same

A launch tube assembly including an aft launch tube portion, a forward launch tube portion, and a transfer sleeve having a first end fixed to and adjacent the forward end of said aft launch tube portion and a second end adjustably receiving the forward launch tube portion. A forward end of the aft launch tube portion faces a rearward end of the forward launch tube portion within the transfer sleeve. An adjustable plenum is present having a volume within the transfer sleeve defined by an adjusted distance between the facing ends of aft and forward launch tube portions. An end cap is pinned to a forward end of the forward launch tube portion, a gas generator housed in the aft launch tube portion, and a countermeasure device is housed in the forward launch tube portion. An adjustably selected volume of the plenum is such that a gas generated by the gas generator will enable propulsion of the countermeasure device at a predetermined acceleration from the forward launch tube portion.

Launch tube with adjustable plenum

A system for providing pressurized fluid for a small device launch system is shown. The system includes a piston housing an air source aperture, a launcher bore, and a shaft aperture. A piston and piston shaft slide in the chamber with the piston shaft extending out the shaft aperture. A hydraulic control cylinder is connected to the piston shaft and a controller is joined to control the cylinder. In a preferred embodiment, the controller controls flow through a variable restriction valve positioned in hydraulic communication between sides of the hydraulic cylinder. A position indicator can also be provided for communicating the position of the piston shaft to the controller.

Small device launch system

A piston deceleration system includes an elongated piston shaft having an intermediate stop member and a second stop member formed thereon. A piston member is slidably seated on the elongated shaft between the intermediate stop member and the second stop member. A tank member is provided having a first end surface with a first opening and a shaft aperture formed therein and a second end surface having a second opening formed therein. The piston shaft is slidably positioned into the tank member through at least the first end surface shaft aperture. A shaft shock absorbing member is positioned between the intermediate stop member and the piston member on the piston shaft, and a piston shock absorbing member is positioned between the piston member and the second end of the tank member.

Piston deceleration system

A breech plug support mechanism for a launcher barrel having a removable ech plug comprising a handle connected to the plug by at least one leg means, the handle having a pivot arm connected thereto, the pivot arm including a traverse rod and arranged parallel to the barrel, at least one bracket connected to the barrel and having a rotator connected to the bracket, and wherein the traverse rod rotatably engages the rotator for rotating the plug adjacent the barrel during loading of the launcher. The traverse rod includes a stop key member for engaging a slot within the rotator to control the rotational movement of the traverse rod. Additionally, the pivot arm at the end nearest the plug includes a sleeve having a key slot which engages a key on the handle leg to maintain alignment of the plug with the locking ring therefor.

Breech plug support mechanism

A fast acting valve for use in a stored energy projectile launching system. he valve has an inlet port for connection to a storage energy device, an outlet port for connection to a launching tube and an intermediate chamber. The interior of the valve seat communicates with one of the ports through a plurality of apertures that permit liquid to transfer between the ports. A cylindrical valve lies inside the cylindrical valve seat and sealingly, slidingly engages the interior of the cylindrical valve seat. A microprocessor-based control system provides a controlled velocity profile transfer of the valve between a first position in which the valve seals the ports and a second position in which the valve clears the ports.

Fast-acting valve for projective launching systems

A system for launching a projectile includes a source of stored energy such s a pressurized fluid, a projectile within a launch barrel which communicates with the source of pressurized fluid, a fluid flow path between the two having at least one flow port, an object for blocking the at least one flow port and a valve for moving the blocking object and thereby allowing the pressurized fluid to enter the launch barrel and initiate launch of the projectile. The valve for moving the blocking object communicates directly with the energy storage device of the launch system and is used to move the blocking means by introducing fluid against a rear face thereof. In one embodiment of the present invention, the blocking object may be a disposable poppet. In an alternative embodiment, it may be the projectile itself. The launch system of the present invention has the advantages of being relatively simple, quiet and highly reliable. It also has the advantage of very rapidly opening a flow port substantially equal in size to the projectile to be launched.

Pressure balanced fast opening firing system for a stored energy

A cascade orificial resistive device for throttling fluid flow which minies acoustic noise and internal vibrations is described herein. The device has a hollow body defining a fluid passageway, a plurality of perforated plates mounted within the passageway, a fixed end ring adjacent one end of the perforated plates, and a threadable end ring adjacent an opposite end of the perforated plates to place the plates in compression. Each of the perforated plates is a single piece molded plate having an integral outer ring and an integrally formed center keying mechanism as well as a plurality of orifices. The keying mechanism formed on each plate is designed so that adjacent ones of the plates have their orifices misaligned. In this manner, a pressure drop across each plate is created and the fluid flow through the device is throttled. The device of the present invention has utility in a number of onboard marine vessel systems wherein reduced acoustic noise and internal vibrations are particularly desirable.

Cascade orificial resistive device

A firing assembly for a stored energy projectile launcher of the type hav an energy storage device that is pressurized by a fluid. The projectile is mechanically latched in its launch tube and the aft end of the projectile cooperates with the breach end of the launch tube to define a breach chamber that communicates with and is pressurized with the bladder. A valve in a line from the breach chamber is electrically controlled to move a piston and release the mechanical latch when fluid pressure is provided to the piston chamber. The pressure used to overcome the force needed to raise the piston is taken from the energy storage device. No addition of energy to the system is required, with the exception of a short electrical impulse signal, to open a full port valve acting instantaneously on the rear face of the projectile.
