Systems, methods, and computer-readable programs are provided for authentication of unencrypted message(s) transmitted between two devices of a power grid over a public communications network are provided. The authentication uses a quantum-based secret key and an initialization vector generated from a quantum random number to generate a payload for a transmission packet. The quantum-based secret key is shared between the transmitting device and the receiving device. When the receiving device receives the packet, the receiving device uses the shared quantum-based secret key and the initialization vector to verify whether the payload in the packet is authentic.

Authentication of smart grid communications using quantum key distribution

A nonlinear fiber interferometer is disclosed suitable for fiber sensor and other applications. A first nonlinear fiber section amplifies probe and conjugate sidebands of a pump through four-wave mixing. A second section introduces a phase shift to be measured, for example from a sensor. A third nonlinear fiber section amplifies with phase-sensitive gain to increase signal-to-noise ratio. Based on phase-sensitive output power of probe and/or conjugate components, the phase shift can be measured. Superior performance can be obtained by balancing gain between the (first and third) nonlinear sections. Non-fiber, for example photonic integrated circuit, embodiments are disclosed. Differential sensing, alternative detection schemes, sensing applications, associated methods, and other variations are disclosed.

Gain balanced nonlinear optical interferometer

Nonlinear interferometers include a nonlinear optical medium that is situated to produce a conjugate optical beam in response to a pump beam and a probe beam. The pump, probe, and conjugate beams propagate displaced from each other along a common optical path. One of the beams is selectively phase shifted, and the beams are then returned to the nonlinear medium, with the selectively phase shift beam phase shifted again. The nonlinear medium provides phase sensitive gain to at least one of the probe or conjugate beams, and the amplified beam is detected to provide an estimate of the phase shift.

Nonlinear interferometer systems and methods

An apparatus for producing a single photon can comprise a modulator that modulates the wavelength of a pump beam based on wavelength of an idler photon of a signal/idler photon pair. A wavelength division multiplexer combines the modulated pump beam and the signal photon in a non-linear element to produce an output photon having a preselected wavelength based on signal photon wavelength and a wavelength of the modulated pump beam.

Deterministic single-photon source based on spectral shift of a heralded photon

Devices and methods for converting an input electromagnetic signal to an output optical signal consisting of dual sidebands with equalized quantum-limited noise figures of about 3 dB are provided. For instance, a device includes an input for receiving the input electromagnetic signal and an output for delivering the output optical signal; and a non-linear material component connected between the input and the output of the device, the non-linear material component having a non-linear electric susceptibility, wherein the non-linear electric susceptibility of the non-linear material component is selected to mix the input signal with an optical pump signal to produce the output optical signal, wherein the output optical signal has sidebands corresponding to the input signal, and amplifying this optical signal in a phase-sensitive amplifier to produce an output optical signal with sidebands having equalized amplitudes and noise figures.

Devices and methods for converting electromagnetic signals into optical signals

Provided are methods and systems for controlling a phase characteristic of entangled photon pairs. The phase characteristic may be a relative phase difference between photons of the entangled photon pair. Also provided are methods and systems for stabilizing distributed interferometers used in quantum communication systems.

System for continuously active stabilization of interferometers in quantum time-bin entanglement distribution

In one aspect, there is provided a method for transmitting a two-qubit state. The method includes: propagating the two-qubit state onto a transmission waveguide, wherein the propagating includes distributing the two-qubit state about a certain phase; and transmitting the two-qubit state through the transmission waveguide using a pump pulse having the certain phase, wherein the pump pulse is provided in a manner so that the transmission waveguide functions as an optical phase sensitive amplifier (OPSA).

Quantum communications of a two-qubit state

A system and method for processing an input signal includes a non-linear material component for receiving the signal. The non-linear material component is selected to mix the input signal with an optical pump wave to output an optical signal. The system also includes a parametric amplifier coupled to the non-linear material to obtain the optical signal and to amplify the optical signal to generate an amplified signal and an amplified idler which is a conjugate image of the amplified signal. The system also includes a frequency converter, to obtain the amplified signal and the amplified idler from the parametric amplifier and to convert the amplified signal and the amplified idler into a first output and a second output. The system also includes a first spectral sampling and processing apparatus to obtain and process the first output.

Signal processor and detector

A system comprises a source of entangled photon pairs. The source is to place a signal photon and an idler photon in individual unknown quantum states but in a known entangled quantum state. One or more transmission channels are connected to the source. Each of the one or more transmission channels transmits one of the signal photon or the idler photon. Each of the one or more transmission channels is to substantially balance an instantaneous transmission loss with an instantaneous transmission gain distributed over a transmission distance. Analysis interferometers are configured to receive a corresponding one of the signal photon or the idler photon. Each of the one or more analysis interferometers is to perform a basis measurement on one of the signal photon or the idler photon. Single-photon detectors detect one of the signal photon or the idler photon.

Method to mitigate propagation loss in waveguide transmission of quantum states

A photon source capable of emitting, for example, a single photon or a single pair of photons on demand. The photon source may include an excitation region where a single instance of a quantum system is excited using excitation energy. A Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) technique can be used for exciting the quantum system to a desired energy level. The photon source may include a photon emission region physically displaced from the excitation region. A transport device can be used for controllably moving an excited quantum system from the excitation region to the photon emission region. The photon emission region may include a resonant cavity tuned to the de-excitation frequency of the quantum system for inducing de-excitation of the quantum system and emission of a photon. The photon emission resonant cavity may be switchably coupled to an output port by a tunable resonant cavity coupling device.

Single photon source

Systems for enhancing the sensitivity of detecting an optical signal using nonlinear optics and method of performing the same. In one embodiment, a single-photon detection system includes an optical amplifier realized in a waveguide, and a photodetector coupled to an output of the optical amplifier. A light detection and ranging system includes the optical amplifier coupled to an optical source and one photodetector. In another embodiment, a photodetection system includes a plurality of optical frequency converters, coupled to an optical source, that sequentially convert a wavelength of photons of the optical source to a final wavelength, and a single-photon photodetector coupled to the optical frequency converters to detect single photons produced by the optical source. In another embodiment, an optical sensor includes an optical pump, and a transducer including an optical ring cavity coupled to the optical pump and configured to utilize optical four-wave mixing to detect an external stimulus.
