Magnetoelectric antenna arrays

A thin film heterostructure of a topological insulator (TI) with a normal metal (NM) is used as a highly energy efficient and low power dissipation spin Hall Material (SHM). The TI material is sputter deposited onto a substrate and cooled in high vacuum, and an NM material is sputter deposited onto the TI film. The structure and method is compatible with complementary metal oxide (CMOS) processes, and with growth of large-area TI films for wafer-level device fabrication.

Millimeter thick magnetic PCB with high relative permeability and devices thereof

A solidly mounted resonator (SMR)-based magnetoelectric (ME) antenna comprises a substrate, a Bragg reflector disposed on the substrate, a magnetostrictive/piezoelectric ME composite element disposed on the Bragg reflector, a first electrically conductive contact and a second electrically conductive contact. The first contact is disposed between the Bragg reflector and the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric ME composite element and electrically coupled to a bottom surface of the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric ME composite element. The second contact is disposed on top of the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric ME composite element and electrically coupled to the top of the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric ME composite element. The magnetostrictive/piezoelectric ME composite element comprises a magnetorestrictive multilayer deposited on a piezoelectric layer. The magnetorestrictive multilayer produces an in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA). The UMA is a twofold UMA that exhibits a symmetric radiation pattern.

Mechanically driven SMR-BASED MEMS magnetoelectric antennas

A sputter growth method for a crystalline ordered topological insulator (TI) material on an amorphous substrate, which is possible to use at a CMOS-compatible temperature. The process can be integrated into CMOS fabrication processes for Spin Orbit Torque (SOT) devices. The resulting material can include a thin film crystalline ordered TI layer, sputter deposited on an amorphous substrate, and an adjacent ferromagnetic (FM) layer in which spin-orbit torque is provided by the TI layer, for example to cause switching in magnetic states in a magnetic memory device.

Sputter deposited crystalline ordered topological insulator/ferromagnet (TI/FM) thin film heterostructures for spintronics applications

Two or more high permeability magnetodielectric slabs in combination with electrical coils wound on each slab form a compact antenna that radiates electromagnetic signals efficiently in the omnidirectional pattern.

Compact and efficient magnetodielectric antenna

Provided herein are devices (e.g., electrochemical sensors useful for detecting volatile organic compounds associated with certain diseases or conditions and/or diagnosing certain diseases or conditions). The devices comprise one or more layers of metal on a layer of silicon, and a layer of molecularly imprinted polymer in electrical communication with the one or more layers of metal, wherein the one or more layers of metal are each independently selected from a layer of chromium, platinum, gold, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, rhodium, iridium, silver, tin, titanium or tantalum, or an alloy thereof. Methods of using the devices (e.g., to detect one or more analytes in a sample, to detect and/or diagnose a disease or condition in a subject), and methods of making the devices are also provided.

Molecularly-imprinted electrochemical sensors

A nanomechanical magnetoelectric antenna includes a thin film heterostructure that has a magnetic element and a piezoelectric element. The heterostructure is suspended on a substrate and is capable of resonating at acoustic resonance frequencies. In the transmission mode of the antenna, oscillating mechanical strain produced by voltage-induced acoustic waves is transferred to the thin film heterostructure through strain mediated magnetoelectric coupling. This gives rise to magnetization oscillation or magnetic current that radiates electromagnetic waves at the acoustic resonance frequencies. In the receiving mode, the heterostructure senses magnetic components of electromagnetic waves arriving at the antenna, converting these into a piezoelectric voltage output.

Nanoscale radio frequency magnetoelectric antenna

Compact and power efficient acoustically actuated magnetoelectric antennas for transmitting and receiving very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic waves utilize magnetoelectric coupling in a magnetic/piezoelectric heterostructure to provide voltage control of magnetization in transmission mode and magnetic control of electric polarization in receiving mode. The magnetoelectric antennas provide a power efficiency enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to magnetically or mechanically switching the magnetization. The antennas can be used in groups or arrays and can be combined to form VLF communication systems.

Magnetoelectric very low frequency communication system

A method of manufacturing an electrostatically tunable magnetoelectric inductor, the method includes forming a piezoelectric layer on a substrate. The method further includes forming a magnetoelectric structure over the piezoelectric layer by: forming a first electrically conductive layer disposed above the piezoelectric layer; forming an isolation layer configured to translate changes in strain; forming a magnetic film layer disposed over the isolation layer; and forming a second electrically conductive layer, disposed over the magnetic film layer and wherein the second electrically conductive layer is in electrical communication with the first electrically conductive layer so as to form at least one electrically conductive coil around the magnetic film layer.

Manufacturing method for electrostatically tunable magnetoelectric inductors with large inductance tunability

An electrostatically tunable magnetoelectric inductor including: a substrate; a piezoelectric layer; and a magnetoelectric structure comprising a first electrically conductive layer, a magnetic film layer, a second electrically conductive layer, and recesses formed so as to create at least one electrically conductive coil around the magnetic film layer; with a portion of the substrate removed so as to enhance deformation of the piezoelectric layer. Also disclosed is a method of making the same. This inductor displays a tunable inductance range of &#x3e;5:1 while consuming less than 0.5 mJ of power in the process of tuning, does not require continual current to maintain tuning, and does not require complex mechanical components such as actuators or switches.

Electrostatically tunable magnetoelectric inductors with large inductance tunability

An instantaneous/real-time wireless dynamic tire pressure sensor (DTPS) for characterizing pavement qualities and for detecting surface and subsurface pavement defects under normal driving conditions. Signal processing provides quantitative assessment of surface conditions. DTPS includes a vehicle tire valve stem-mounted pressure sensor and wheel hub-mounted signal conditioning, amplification, and transmitting circuitry. A signal processing computer within the vehicle is wirelessly coupled to the hub-mounted circuitry. Tire pressure changes caused by ground vibration excitation from the interaction between the tire and pavement at normal driving speeds are detected. When acoustic radiation from a surface wave is significantly stronger than acoustic noise, subsurface information can be extracted. An energy harvester based on strong magnetostatic coupling between a high permeability core solenoid, fixed proximate a vehicle wheel, and a bias magnet array, fixedly mounted in conjunction with a dust shield, can provide power the DIPS.

Real-time wireless dynamic tire pressure sensor and energy harvesting system

The present disclosure describes a vibration energy harvester with increased output power density. The vibration energy harvester has two magnetic solenoids, each with cores that include multiple layers of high permeability materials. The two magnetic solenoids are fixed at two sides of a movably supported hard magnetic core, such as a magnet pair with anti-parallel magnetization, which produces a spatially inhomogeneous bias magnetic field for switching the flux inside the solenoids during vibration of the magnetic core. An output voltage of 2.52 V and a power density 20.84 mW/cm3 at 42 Hz, with a half peak working bandwidth of 6 Hz.

High energy density vibration energy harvesting device with high-mu material

A perpendicular write head includes a main pole comprising high moment magnetic layers laminated with both soft magnetic layers and non-magnetic layers for antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC) between the high moment material layers. The perpendicular write head includes a return pole connected to the main pole by a back gap closure at a distal end and separated from the main pole by a gap at an air bearing surface (ABS). A write coil is positioned between the main pole and the return pole and the surface area of the return pole at the ABS is substantially larger than the surface area of the main pole at the ABS.
