In response to a rotation of timing-based servo (TBS) patterns of a first servo band and a second servo band, heights of top and bottom portions of servo stripes of servo frames of the TBS patterns are adjusted to compensate for changes in a usable height of the servo stripes caused by the rotation.

Servo pattern for skew based tape dimensional stability compensation

In one general embodiment, a data storage product includes a magnetic recording tape having written thereon at least two servo tracks extending along a longitudinal axis of the tape. Each servo track has a timing-based servo (TBS) pattern comprising a series of servo frames arranged to enable lateral positioning of a magnetic head relative to the servo tracks as well as tape dimensional stability (TDS) compensation via head skew. Each frame comprises a sequence of pairs of leading and trailing servo stripes. Midpoints between the servo stripes in each pair, at all points having a same relative lateral height on the tape, are located along a virtual median line oriented at an angle β from perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tape, the angle β being greater than 1 degree.

A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: receiving a first timestamp in response to a first servo reader detecting a stripe of a first servo burst on the magnetic tape, and receiving a second timestamp in response to a second servo reader detecting a stripe of a second servo burst on the magnetic tape. A third timestamp is received in response to the first servo reader detecting a stripe of a third servo burst on the magnetic tape, while a fourth timestamp is received in response to the second servo reader detecting a stripe of a fourth servo burst on the magnetic tape. The first, second, third, and fourth timestamps are used to determine the skew of the magnetic tape. Further still, the first and third servo bursts are in a same first servo sub-frame, while the second and fourth servo bursts are in a same second servo sub-frame.

Accurate skew determination for magnetic tapes experiencing the effects of tape dimensional instability

A tape drive may arrange timing-based-servo marks into a timing-based-servo pattern. The timing-based-servo pattern may be at least one M-pattern. The tape drive may select the at least one M-pattern. The tape drive may match at least two timing-based-servo marks in the at least one M-pattern. The tape drive may determine, from the matching, whether an alignment of the at least two timing-based-servo marks is demonstrative of tape-creep.

A tape drive may calculate the slopes for three successive timing-based-servo marks in a timing-based-servo group. The timing-based-servo marks may be arranged in a one or more M-patterns. The three successive timing-based-servo marks may be across the one or more M-patterns. The tape drive may perform a parabolic fit of a gradient of the slopes. The tape drive may determine whether the gradient is demonstrative of tape-creep.

At least one jack screw from a tape deck base may be removed. The tape deck base may be below a rigid support base that includes a rigid support shaft in the center of the rigid support base. A piezoelectric stack may be inserted where the at least one jack screw was removed from the tape deck base. A tape drive may calculate a slope for each of the timing-based-servo marks in a timing-based-servo group. The timing-based-servo marks are arranged in one or more M-patterns. The tape drive may average the slope for each of the timing-based-servo marks across the one or more M-patterns. The tape drive may generate a least-squares assessment of the averaged slope. The tape drive may determine, from the least-squares assessment, whether the averaged slope is demonstrative of tape-creep.

A tape drive-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: using information read from one or more servo bands on a magnetic tape to position a magnetic tape head relative to the magnetic tape. An array of data transducers is positioned along the magnetic tape head, the array extending perpendicular to a direction of travel of the magnetic tape. Moreover, a group of servo readers is positioned at each end of the array of data transducers. A distance between each of the immediately adjacent servo readers in each of the groups of servo readers is less than or equal to one third of a prespecified width of each of the servo bands. Furthermore, the distance between each of the servo readers in each of the groups and the prespecified width are both measured in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the magnetic tape.

Hybrid servo pattern configurations for magnetic tape

A determination is made whether read/write is enabled within the tape drive storage unit. In response to determining that read/write is enabled, a determination is made whether a temperature within the tape drive storage unit exceeds a threshold value. In response to determining that the temperature within the tape drive storage unit exceeds the threshold value, a determination is made of a direction of travel of a tape media within the tape drive storage unit. In response to determining that the direction of travel is a forward direction, a first cooling device is powered on. The first cooling device lowers the temperature of a first guide roller and the tape media coming off a first tape storage reel prior to the tape media passing by a read/write head within the tape drive storage unit.

Tape drive bearing temperature control

In one general embodiment, a method includes calculating a differential position value based on readback signals from at least two servo readers of a magnetic head reading servo tracks of a magnetic recording tape. The differential position value is compared to a previously-calculated differential position value. An action is performed in response to determining that the difference between the differential position value and the previously-calculated differential position value is in a predefined range. In another general embodiment, an apparatus includes a magnetic head having at least two servo readers, and a controller in communication with the servo readers. The controller is configured to detect a sudden change in a width of a magnetic recording tape based on a differential position value derived from relatively more current servo readback data and a second differential position value derived from relatively older servo readback data.

Tape damage detection

A product, according to one embodiment, includes: a tape spool having: a first flange, a second flange, and a circular hub sandwiched between the first and second flanges. The tape spool also includes a cylindrical compliance layer which encircles the hub. The compliance layer is configured to dampen radial stress exerted on the hub by a tape wound around the hub. A product, according to another embodiment, includes: a tape cartridge having: an outer housing, and a tape spool positioned within the outer housing. The tape spool further includes: a first flange, a circular hub coupled to the first flange, and a cylindrical compliance layer which encircles the hub. A magnetic tape is also wrapped around the compliance layer and the hub. Moreover, the compliance layer is configured to dampen radial stress exerted on inner wraps of the magnetic tape.

A determination is made whether read/write is enabled within the tape drive storage unit. In response to determining that read/write is enabled, a determination is made whether an absolute value of a channel offset exceeds a threshold value. In response to determining that the absolute value of the channel offset exceeds a threshold value, a direction of travel of the tape media is determined. In response to determining that the direction of travel of the tape media is a forward direction, a determination is made whether the channel offset is positive. In response to determining that the channel offset is positive, a left cooling device within the tape drive storage unit is powered on. The left cooling device lowers the temperature of a left guide roller and the tape media coming off a left tape storage reel prior to the media passing by a read/write head.
