A method for configuring a software application. The method includes obtaining user profiles each containing attribute values corresponding to a portion of an attribute list, identifying a user subset having same attribute values for a particular portion of the attribute list and forming an attribute signature, analyzing the configuration setting used by each user in the user subset to generate a statistical measure representing the user subset configuring the software application, matching a new user profile to the attribute signature of the user subset, presenting, to the new user and in response to the matching, the statistical measure representing the user subset configuring the software application, and receiving, in response to presenting the statistical measure, an approval from the new user to customize the software application, where the software application is automatically customized based on the statistical measure representing the user subset configuring the software application.

Automatic customization of a software application

A method to adapt a software application for a geographical region. The invention includes receiving, by a computer processor and from at least one of a plurality of users of the software application, a first translation of a localizable item in a user interface (UI) menu of the software application, wherein the first translation is based on a language of the geographical region, generating, by the computer processor, a tally of the first translation from the plurality of users, presenting, to the plurality of users via a plurality of instantiations of the UI menu in response to the tally exceeding a pre-determined count, the localizable item using the first translation, receiving, from the plurality of users via the plurality of instantiations of the UI menu, feedback regarding the accuracy of the first translation, and classifying, based on the feedback, the first translation as an approved translation of the localizable item.

Software localization through user contribution

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that facilitates diagnostic logging for software components. During operation, the system receives program code for a software component that was generated from an object model, where a key attribute has been specified for the object model. During execution of the program code, the system detects when an instance of the key attribute for the object model is accessed, and attaches state associated with the instance to a thread context in the runtime environment. The system then appends this state to a log during a logging operation to facilitate discovering and analyzing program faults.

Method and apparatus for facilitating diagnostic logging for software components

Some embodiments of the present invention provide a system that measures the quality of a software system. During operation, the system performs a series of stress tests on the software system and determines a set of failure rates for the software system from the stress tests. One or more embodiments of the invention provide a method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for collaborating application programs executing on a client such as a personal digital assistant (PDA). A shared database on the client is obtained and used as a common launch parameter stack. One or more program entry records are stored in the database and the last program entry record stored is identified as the top of the stack. Each program entry record may include information regarding an application launched on the client. When the last program identified on the stack has completed execution, the last program entry record is popped off of the stack. Thereafter, control is returned to an application that corresponds to the new program entry record on the top of the stack.

A method, system, and article of manufacture provide for an interactive geographic information system on a thin client. Geographic information may be viewed and interacted with on the thin client. The information is available while the thin client is connected or disconnected to/from a network. A method, system, and article of manufacture provide the ability to redline or mark up geographic information on a personal digital assistant (PDA). An application on the PDA is configured to obtain map data from a server and display the map data on a screen of the PDA. Markup data is obtained from a user through a stylus that is used to markup the map displayed on the PDA. A file comprised of the markup data is created and then uploaded from the PDA to the server. Accordingly, the markup data comprises a markup layer that is stored locally on the PDA and uploaded (synchronized) with the server automatically when a list of a set of maps is updated.

Embodiments of the invention provide access to a user's profile information to a location based service, location enable user profile information in external databases, portals, etc., and allow the seamless/transparent provision of location services using both internal and external profile information. A compact definition of a schema of an external database (that comprises a user's profile information) is stored. Data source information that describes how to connect and communicate with the external database and a structured query language (SQL) statement is stored, wherein the statement, upon execution, extracts properties from the external database corresponding to the compact definition. A foreign key identifies a record in the external database and positional information for the record in the external database is stored as a geocoding index. The stored information is then used to provide access to the user's profile information.

Location based services bridge to external data sources

A method, system, and article of manufacture enable the use of location based applications (LBA). A location server (LS) on a wireless network receives trigger information from a LBA that is located outside of the wireless network. The trigger information defines a source locatable, spatial information (defining spatial criteria for a target locatable), a notification flag (describing) an interaction between the source locatable and the spatial criteria), and temporal information (defining a time period the trigger will be active). The LS determines if the triggers are active based on the temporal information and obtains updated locations if the trigger is active. Active triggers are evaluated to determine if a trigger alert has been caused by the locatables interacting with each other pursuant to the spatial information and notification flag. A location answer is pushed to the LBA if a trigger alert has been caused.

One or more embodiments of the invention provide a method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for refining an approximate location of a mobile device using fuzzy logic reasoning. An approximate location of a device is determined. A rule base that comprises an ordered collection of rules is then read into memory, or loaded from a database. A set of imprecise inputs are captured for processing in the rules. However, prior to processing the inputs in the rules, the inputs are processed to determine a magnitude of participation of the input in the rules. The rules are then applied to the imprecise inputs based on the magnitude of participation to produce a logical product. A refined location is then computed based on the logical product.

Fuzzy logic reasoning for inferring user location preferences

One or more embodiments of the invention provide a method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for locating a mobile device. An application programming interface (API), executed by a computer, provides a plurality of simplified procedures that allow an application program executed by the computer to locate the mobile device. The application program invokes the simplified procedures of the API. The invoked procedures obtain a location of the mobile device given an identification of the mobile device and a description of a spatial reference system associated with the location. Additionally, the invoked procedures interact with specifics for a mobile positioning server of a carrier of the mobile device and with different methods of identifying the device as required by the carrier.

One or more embodiments of the invention provide a method, method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for determining a meeting location. A location for each of two or more persons is obtained. A central location is then determined based on the obtained locations. A list of activity preferences for each of the two or more persons is also obtained. Thereafter, a ranked list of activity preferences based on the obtained lists of activity preferences is computed. The ranked list represents a convergence of interests for the two or more persons. One or more meeting locations are then determined by combining the central location and ranked list.

Meeting location determination using spatio-semantic modeling

A schema provides for the storage of geographic information on a personal digital assistant (PDA). Embodiments provide differential encoding and indexing of raster and vector based data. A schema provides for compact and performable storage of both data and metadata for raster, vector, and redlining information. A single database is utilized for mapset metadata and data. Timestamp/history information allows smart, incremental updates of the database. Indexing information allows compact and efficient storage and retrieval of objects and vector geometry. The schema allows a variable number of mapsets, maps, raster tiles, and geometry layers. Metadata for geometry types and redlining markup information are permitted. Geo-referencing information for raster and vector data allows the display of objects at the correct map location. Raster data is augmented with compact vector data. The vector data may be used for efficiently storing and retrieving the map data, allowing interactive selection, and the highlighting and querying of objects. Vectors are generalized by removing detail without losing shape information in a manner appropriate to PDA display resolution. Object location data is differentially encoded to provide precision using a fewer number of bytes (2 bytes per coordinate). The vector object includes spatial indexing information, to allow for spatial filtering of objects that fall within a specified view. Thus, the invention uses cartographic generalization, encoding, and indexing to provide for compact, and efficient spatial storage structures that deal with the PDA constraints of limited storage, processing power, memory and bandwidth.
