A bending apparatus for bending and transporting an aluminum metal sheet. The bending apparatus includes a central retaining portion that has gripping elements mounted on the central retaining portion for retaining an aluminum metal sheet. There is also included a bending mechanism that is mounted to the central retaining portion. The bending mechanism is capable of axial movement in relation to a central axis of the central retaining portion for imparting a curvature to an aluminum metal sheet. There is also included a method of stretch forming an aluminum metal sheet including the steps of heating an aluminum metal sheet in an oven, transferring the heat of an aluminum sheet to a hot forming tool, bending the heated aluminum sheet during the transfer step to conform the sheet to a shape of the hot forming tool, and then placing the bent metal sheet in the hot forming tool and forming an A-shaped part.

A method of stretch forming an aluminum metal sheet that includes the steps of placing an aluminum metal sheet in a hot forming tool, forming a shaped part at an elevated temperature, removing the hot shaped part from the forming tool, and thereafter transferring the hot shaped part to a cooling fixture. The transfer and removal steps are performed at a speed that is variable based on a correlation of the temperature and strength of the aluminum metal sheet and the speed at which the hot shaped part may be transferred without distortion of its shape due to inertia.

Equipment and method for the rapid and easy extraction of formed metal parts from forming dies while in a press and operating at elevated temperatures. The invention features the controlled supply of streams of air or other inert gas to the interface of the hot surface of the forming die and the formed panel to augment removal so that flaws from removal equipment are minimized for optimized production of high quality parts. High velocity air is discharged through nozzles onto the forming surfaces of hot forming dies to cool the forming die and the part that contract at different rates and pop the part from the surface.

Equipment and methods for the rapid and easy cleaning of metal forming dies while in a press and operating at elevated temperatures. The invention features the physical removal of excess lubricant collecting on the hot surface of the forming dies under operating conditions so that no lubricant-induced flaws occur on the show surface of the formed part for optimized production of high quality parts. Special and effector tooling is supplied with high velocity air which draws in solid CO which sublimes into pressurize streams of gaseous CO that is discharged through nozzles onto the forming surfaces of hot forming dies after a number of lubricated parts have been formed therewith to physically sweep foreign matter including lubricants from the die surfaces. A robot is employed to move the activated end effector in predetermined paths across the dies for fully sweeping and cleaning the forming surfaces. The gas then dissipates.

Hot die cleaning for superplastic and quick plastic forming

A device is disclosed for loading and positioning a sheet metal blank between upper and lower tool members adapted to close and engage the blank for the purpose of preforming and heating it in preparation for a superplastic forming operation. The loading device comprises a supported horizontal shaft carrying a rotatable counterbalanced arm with a pad on the arm for use in positioning a corner or edge of the blank. In the operation of the device: (a) the arm is balanced with a suitable counterweight for initially supporting and positioning the blank between the open tools, (b) the arm and its pad rotates downwardly with the blank as the tools are closed drawing the blank between them, (c) the rotating arm and pad release the blank as it is withdrawn from their reach, and (d) the unloaded arm and pad are returned to their initial position by the counter balance.
