This invention relates to novel hydrophilic, crosslinked, polyurea-urethane, solid, discrete particles formed by adding in droplet form a hydrophilic prepolymer comprising an isocyanate-capped polyol or mixtures thereof wherein said polyol or mixture of polyols has a reaction functionality greater than two, the total of said polyol present having an ethylene oxide content of at least 40 weight percent, before capping to a large excess of a stirred aqueous reactant. The resultant solid particles can be molded into various shapes as desired or used for coating or adhesive applications.

This invention is directed to a process for forming a wettable battery separator comprising a non-woven mat of polyolefin fiber by forming a non-woven mat of polyolefin fiber having a thickness in the range 10 to 40 mils and pore sizes less than 40 microns, contacting the mat with an aqueous solution of a water soluble peroxy compound, e.g. hydrogen peroxide or potassium persulfate at a temperature below 70.degree. C., rinsing the mat in water and thereafter immersing the thus treated mat in an aqueous solution of a hydrophilic vinyl monomer such as acrylic, methacrylic, vinyl sulfonic acid, said solution containing a redox catalyst, e.g. an ion of a transition metal, e.g. ferrous, cerous, cobaltous, or an organic amine, thereby causing a graft polymerization of said hydrophilic vinyl monomer on said polyolefin mat to give a wettable polyolefin battery separator.

The invention disclosed is directed to biodegradable hydrophilic polyurethane structures prepared by using an isocyanate capped hydroxyester polyol reactant with large amounts of aqueous reactant. Ultra fine polypropylene fibers having a length of 1-100 microns and a diameter of 0.05-2 microns are admixed with a polyester resin composition comprising a polyester resin of a polyhydric alcohol and an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid admixed with a solvent such as styrene in an amount effective to cause the resulting thickened composition to have a thixotropic index of 1.5-8. The resulting thickened composition is useful for building or repairing fiber glass-polyester boats. The incorporation of such ultrafine polypropylene fibers in an epoxy resin composition also thickens the epoxy resin composition and causes it to have a thixotropic index of about 1.5-8.

A method for decreasing fouling of metalliferous surfaces of apparatus wherein water is evaporated from an aqueous system containing components which deposit onto the surfaces as hydrophilic foulants. The method comprises adding to the aqueous system a chelant-surfactant having a hydrophobic moiety and a chelating moiety through which the chelant-surfactant chelates with the metalliferous surfaces and provides a hydrophobic barrier to deposition of hydrophilic foulants.
