The disclosure relates generally to methods and reagents for reducing or shutting down lactation in a non-human mammalian subject. In particular, the disclosure relates to a method of reducing or shutting down lactation in a non-human mammalian subject by administering to the subject by intramammary infusion an agent which activate the OAS2 signalling pathway or induce expression of OAS2. In some examples, the methods and reagents of the disclosure may be useful for the prevention of mastitis in a non-human mammalian subject, such as a dairy cow.

Methods for reducing or shutting down lactation in non-human mammals and reagents therefor

The present disclosure relates to the use of pharmaceutical agents to manipulate serotonin in animal mammary glands. Use of the serotonin agents results in increased PTHrP levels, resulting in the release of calcium from the bone, which improves lactation.

Compositions and methods for improving lactation

The present invention is a method for increasing serotonin activity in mammary glands such that involution of milk secretion of the same mammary glands occurs. The present invention further is a composition that can be implanted, or infused into the mammary glands to cause involution of milk secretion.

Control of milk production and mammary involution

The invention relates generally to the use of pharmaceutical compositions to increase milk production alone or in combination with certain biological active ingredients. Specifically, the method relates to the use of pharmaceutical compositions that will act on the feedback of the intrinsic regulatory pathway in the mammalian mammary gland. The present invention provides for as a method of increasing bovine milk production as well as a method of correcting certain human lactation abnormalities. Preferably, the compounds used in the methods of the present invention are one or more active agents capable of inhibiting peripheral aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) enzymes, peripheral tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) enzymes, peripheral serotonin (5-HT) enzymes, or a combination of enzymes thereof.

Method of increasing milk production

A recombinant nucleic acid is provided having an avian promoter. One embodiment of the present invention contemplates the use of a gut-specific promoter, wherein a promoter can be the chicken intestinal fatty acid binding protein promoter region. A method for making a transgenic bird is also disclosed by transfecting a bird with a vector comprising a recombinant nucleic acid comprising a chicken intestinal fatty acid binding protein promoter region operably linked to a heterologous nucleic acid expressing a desired polypeptide to be expressed in the gut tissue of an avian.
