A method of producing a sol of an element selected from the group consisting silicon, aluminum, antimony, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tin and tungsten comprising electrodialytically transferring alkali metal cations of an aqueous solution of a water soluble alkali metal salt of the oxide of the said element from an anode compartment of an electrolytic cell to a cathode compartment of the electrolytic cell while essentially preventing the migration of the metal oxide into the cathode compartment by positioning a cation permselective membrane between the anode compartment and the cathode compartment while carefully and continuously controlling the pH of the solution and removing the so-produced sol from the anode compartment of the electrolytic cell as well as a novel electrodiayltic cell for sol formation.

Method of producing sols by electrodialysis

Disclosed is an electrolytic cell for the generation of low cost halogen biocidally active agent from an aqueous solution having a low halogen salt content for use in the treatment of sewage or other liquid effluents, especially those of fresh water swimming pools or fresh water cooling towers. The electrolytic cell is used in line with pumps generally associated with the distribution of waters for swimming pools or cooling towers.

Electrolytic generation of halogen biocides

An apparatus for treating fluids especially fluids in a recirculating toilet system wherein recycled flush water is chemically treated with a sanitizing material just prior to delivery to the toilet bowl. This system is designed so that the recycled flush water must flow by a predetermined volume of soluble sanitizing tablets which resuts in a rather uniform residual of sanitizing agent in the flush water which insures complete coliform kills. The sanitizing tablets consist of buffered hypochlorite materials to which may be added a suitable coloring agent so as to make the flush water more aesthetically pleasing.

A recirculating toilet having a bowl and a storage chamber, and recirculating means for recirculating liquid from the storage chamber through the bowl and back into the storage chamber. Filter means is interposed between the storage chamber and the recirculating means for filtering solid particles from liquid flowing from the storage chamber toward the recirculating means. A treatment chamber is interposed between the filter means and the recirculating means, and the treatment chamber has a volume substantially smaller than the storage chamber. Treatment means is provided for destroying bacteria in liquid contained in the treatment chamber (flush water).

Recirculating toilet and method

The formation of hardness-caused deposits on the cathodic surfaces of cells used in the electrolytic production of hypochlorite from impure saline solutions is reduced and good current efficiencies are realized by employing flat, continuous cathodes having a surface roughness of less than 2.54 .times. 10.sup.-.sup.4 cm. and passing said solution by said cathodes during electrolysis at a velocity of from 0.3 meter/sec. to the number which is equal to the log expressed by the formula: Log velocity (in m/sec/3) = 1.0 - (available Cl.sub.2 concentration, in grams per liter, divided by 4).

Production of hypochlorite from impure saline solutions

Self setting molds for metal casting are produced using a liquid alkali metal silicate as the binder and a product obtained by reaction of three moles of glycerin and one mole of glacial acetic acid as the catalyst for the binder.
