Techniques for content recommendation are described. Some embodiments provide a content recommendation system ('CRS') configured to recommend content items that are related to a collection of entities. A content item may be considered related to a collection of entities based on various factors, including whether and how often the article references or otherwise covers the entities of the collection, the size of the article, other entities that are covered by the article but that are not in the collection, article recency, or article credibility. Recommending content items may also or instead include determining entities that are related to a collection. An entity can be considered related to a collection based on various factors, such as whether the entity is of the same or similar type to entities of the collection, or whether the entity appears in some article in a relationship with one or more entities of the collection.

Content recommendation based on collections of entities

A method and system for a client device to download media content directly from a group of other client devices which play a role of edge servers placed by a content service provider. According to some embodiments, an end user can use his/her client device to stream or download media content from the source client devices selected based on the geographic locality, network topology, etc. The fractions of data corresponding to a portion of media content are stored on the source client devices such that only a subset of the fractions of data are needed to recreate the corresponding portion. That is, by using the first received of the minimum number of fractions to reconstruct each portion of media content, the system does not need to wait for the slowest fractions to arrive, which contributes in reducing latency.

A method and system for authenticating users while conducting an auction via a computer system. The system can automatically authenticate users who have previously registered with the auction system and who have enabled automatic authentication. When a user is registered, the system may store authentication information in a cookie on the user's computer. When the user decides to perform a transaction (e.g., list item auction or place a bid for an item) that requires authentication, the system retrieves the stored authentication information. If automatic authentication is enabled, then the system allows the transaction to proceed without manual authentication. If, however, automatic authentication is not enabled or the system does not recognize the stored authentication information, then the system requests manual authentication. The use of automatic authentication allows a user to enter information relating to a transaction without manually entering any identification information.

A method of managing subscription-based services is disclosed and includes receiving configuration data from a third-party service provider at a subscription service management system, where the configuration data indicates details of a subscription-based service plan to be fulfilled by the third-party service provider. The method also includes receiving a request from a consumer to receive a service corresponding to the subscription-based service plan, where the request is received at the subscription service management system via an online site. The method also includes activating the service on behalf of the consumer, wherein the consumer is to receive the service during the subscription period. Further, the method includes sending at least one message to the third-party service provider during the subscription period, wherein the at least one message is related to a time-based trigger event associated with the subscription-based service plan.
