Methods and a system for an electronic device to allow for indicating a size or scale of a rendering in a three dimensional view. A virtual scene is displayed on a display with a work product that is rendered, such as a document or packaging request having a job ticket. The rendering is provided with a common object that is a three dimensional virtual object that relates size to the document or packaging for approval in the proofing process. A quick visual cue is therefore provided to visually convey a realistic scale in proportion to the product rendered three dimensionally.

A system and method for a pre-print, three-dimensional virtual rendering of a print piece is disclosed. A plurality of modular/pipelined architectural layers are managed, operated, and organized by a controller. A product definition is provided to a job ticket adaptation layer where it is transformed into a physical model. The physical model is then transformed into a display model via the product model layer. The display model is transformed into a scene that can be displayed on a graphical user interface as a three dimensional virtual rendering by a rendering layer, where the binding elements may further include 3D binding models as well as 2D textures on 3D surfaces to simulate 3D models.

A method of creating a custom document comprises maintaining a database of product information, the product information including, for each of multiple products, a product description, vendor information and at least one vendor specific attribute wherein at least one product from the database includes multiple vendors. At least one product from the database is identified based on customer product preference information that is associated with a customer. For an identified product having multiple vendors, a vendor from the product's associated vendors is selected using customer vendor preference information that is associated with the customer. A system and method is provided for printing variable information documents including processing a VI request which has a dynamic reference and uses a namespace and schema, wherein the dynamic reference specifies information to be integrated into a resolved document. The processing includes mapping between respective namespaces and schemas used by a plurality of data sources and the namespace and schema used by the VI request, and generating at least one query in accordance with the dynamic reference and the mapping. The data sources are queried using the generated at least one query. The resolved document is generated and printed, including integrating data received in response to the querying into the resolved document. The data source(s) to be queried may be selected based on a comparison of a type of information available from the plurality of data sources and a type of information requested via the dynamic references.
