A wireless room occupancy monitor, system and training method are provided. The room occupancy monitor includes an antenna array configured to detect wireless transmissions from a tag device; a wireless transceiver configured to receive the wireless transmissions detected by the antenna array and produce receive signals; a processor configured to process the receive signals; and a motion sensor coupled to the processor and configured to wake up the processor in response to detecting when the tag device enters or exits a room. The monitor is configured to be mounted proximate an entryway to the room. After the motion sensor wakes up the processor, the processor is configured to power on the wireless transceiver and run an algorithm on a sequence of received signal strength estimates and array response vectors derived from the receive signals to determine when the tag device has entered or exited the room via the entryway.

A Usage, Condition and Location System (UCLS) tag is provided, which is an active RFID tag that, in addition to location, is configured to determine the usage state and operating condition of a device. The UCLS tag includes sensors that measure physical activity of the associated equipment (vibration, magnetic activity, temperature, etc.). Algorithms may use the information obtained from the UCLS tags to map the measured sensor data to a contextual usage state and operating condition of the device.

Described in an example embodiment is an end-to-end admission control system that allows any rich media application to secure admission control in an environment where there are mixed wireless and wired segments in the network. In particular embodiments, the system includes the integration of Add Traffic Stream (ADDTS) and Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) admission control mechanisms, the mapping of parameters between these two mechanisms, the admission control policies, and failure handling for the end-to-end resource control.

A monitoring system for a cold storage device such as a vapor compression refrigerator or freezer. The monitoring system learns operating characteristics of the cold storage device and issues alarm notifications when abnormal behavior is detected. Such a system can be used as an 'early warning system' to flag when a cold storage device is not operating properly. Such a system could be particularly valuable in applications that make mission-critical use of cold storage devices, e.g., biomedical or pharmaceutical research labs, blood or tissue banks, grocery stores, restaurants, and the like.

Presented herein are techniques for using uplink transmissions from devices (e.g., wireless tags, clients, etc.) to determine a path loss between neighboring access points. In one example, a wireless controller obtains receive signal strength information of uplink transmissions received at neighboring access points in a wireless network. The wireless controller determines an effective path loss between the neighboring access points based on the receive signal strength information for the uplink transmissions received at the neighboring access points. The wireless controller also performs radio resource management operations in the wireless network using the effective path loss determined based on the uplink transmissions received at the neighboring access points.

Techniques are presented to enable a network element in a network to receive a request from an application on a device, the request being encapsulated in a packet that includes a header that contains a physical layer identifier of the device to which the application does not have access. The physical layer identifier at the network element may be obtained. A response may be sent to the application on the device, the response containing at least one of the physical layer identifier of the device and location information of the device.

Enabling mobile applications to acquire a MAC address for obtaining location information

A first wireless device (e.g., an access point) receives a message from a second wireless device (e.g., a client device). The first device determines an angle-of-arrival of the message at a plurality of antennas of the first wireless device. The first device compares the angle-of-arrival with an angle-of-arrival threshold to determine whether to transmit a response message to the second wireless device. In one example, the first wireless device is a wireless access point device operating in a wireless network, the second wireless device is a wireless client device operating in the wireless network, the message is a probe request message and the response message is a probe response message.

In an example embodiment described herein is an apparatus comprising a wireless transceiver and channel selection logic coupled to the wireless transceiver and operable to select an operating frequency for the wireless transceiver. The channel selection logic is configured to reserve a dedicated channel having a special identifier. The channel selection logic is configured to have the wireless transceiver advertise the dedicated service on a normal operating frequency. The channel selection logic is responsive to receiving a request from a wireless device via the wireless transceiver on the normal operating frequency to use the dedicated channel to switch to the dedicated channel and establish communications with the wireless device on the dedicated channel.

In an example embodiment, a wireless device, such as an access point, employs multiple radios that operate on the same or overlapping channels. For example, the wireless device can be upgraded with a new radio that is compatible with a newer protocol to provide service to newer clients that are capable of employing the new protocol, while also providing backwards compatibility to legacy clients.

In an example embodiment, there is described herein a methodology were the Forward Error Correction (FEC) data for a data stream is distributed into a plurality of FEC sub-streams. Subscribers to the data stream indicate which of the plurality of FEC sub-streams should be provided to them. The distribution of FEC sub-streams are limited to subscribed FEC sub-streams. FEC sub-streams with no subscribers are not forwarded beyond a distribution point such as an access point (AP).

Providing capacity optimized streaming data with forward error correction

At a wireless device operating in an unlicensed frequency band, energy received at a plurality of antennas is analyzed to detect interference on a channel in the unlicensed frequency band. The type of interference detected in the received energy is determined. Parameters are then generated for a nulling filter based on the type of interference detected in the received energy. The nulling filter is applied to the received energy at the plurality of antennas to produce a spatially filtered output. The spatially filtered output is evaluated to determine whether to send a transmission on the channel in the unlicensed frequency band.

Dynamic clear channel assessment using spectrum intelligent interference nulling

Interference in an unlicensed frequency band is spatially filtered out from received signals at a wireless device operating in the unlicensed frequency band. Energy received at a plurality of antennas of the wireless is device is analyzed to detect interference in the unlicensed frequency band. The detected interference is classified by type. Parameters for a nulling filter are generated or selected based on the type of interference detected in the received energy. During a time interval when it is expected to receive desired signals, the nulling filter is applied using the parameters to signals obtained from energy received at the plurality of antennas during the time interval.
