Systems, apparatuses, and methods for implementing a dual-purpose millimeter-wave frequency band transmitter are disclosed. A system includes a dual-purpose transmitter sending a video stream over a wireless link to a receiver. In some embodiments, the video stream is generated as part of an augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) application. The transmitter operates in a first mode to scan and map an environment of the transmitter and receiver. The transmitter generates radio frequency (RF) signals in a first frequency range while operating in the first mode. Additionally, the transmitter operates in a second mode to send video data to the receiver, and the transmitter generates RF signals in the first frequency range while operating in the second mode.

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for implementing beamforming techniques to choose transceivers in a wireless mesh network are disclosed. Multiple transceivers are deployed in a wireless virtual reality (VR) environment to provide a high quality path to send an encoded video stream from a graphics source to a head-mounted display (HMD) receiver. When a master transceiver connected to the graphics source does not have a line of sight connection to the HMD, the master transmitter sends the encoded video stream on a path though one or more passive transceivers that have good line of sight connections on the path to the HMD. To determine the quality of the wireless links between the various transceivers and the HMD, beamforming training procedures are performed. These beamforming training procedures are implemented to determine how to route the encoded video stream from the master transceiver to the HMD.

Beamforming techniques to choose transceivers in a wireless mesh network

In one embodiment, a mode of operation is selected from a plurality of modes of operation, enabling a wireless communications transmitter to be dynamically configured to reach a wireless communications devices at a greater distance from the transmitter without increased interference between communications channels ('range mode') or to provide wireless communications to a greater number of wireless communications devices within a relatively closer distance to the wireless transmitter (&#x201c;capacity mode&#x201d;) or to provide wireless communications using a single channel to provide wireless communications at a relatively greatest distance from the transmitter (&#x201c;super range mode&#x201d;).

Method and apparatus for coverage and throughput enhancement in a wireless communication system

Each wireless antenna arrangement is further configured to determine whether signals are being communicated on a communications channel before transmitting on the communications channel. This may be implemented, for example, using a carrier sense or energy detection mechanism. Wireless devices within a sector may communicate on the same or different communications channels, depending upon the particular multiple access protocol employed.
