A system and method for controlling friction between a mouse and the surface upon which it is placed. Reduction of friction can be accomplished in several ways, including: making the feet of the mouse from various different materials, creating layers of air between the mouse and the surface, creating beveled edges for the feet of mouse, etc. In one embodiment, the feet of the mouse are made of a piezo-electric layer bonded to another layer made of a different material. Exciting the piezo-electric layer at certain frequencies makes the two layers shrink and expand differently, thus creating oscillations of the feet. In yet another embodiment, portions of the mouse feet are made of different materials with different coefficients of friction. These different portions of the feet can be pressed down onto the surface with varying amounts of pressure, thus altering the friction.

A personal audio device including a flexible headband is disclosed. The flexible headband includes a left and right headband portion. The headband has a longitudinal centerline which occupies a substantially single plane. The personal audio device also includes a left earphone, which is secured to a first end of the left headband portion, and a right earphone, which is secured to a first end of the right headband portion. A connector portion connects a second end of the left headband portion with a second end of the right headband portion. The connector portion is linearly adjustable, which enables a distance between the left headband portion and right headband portion to be variable. A change in the distance causes an inversely proportional change in bent compression force applied by a left earphone and applied by the right earphone.

An input device, such as a mouse or trackball, with a top housing having an integrally formed, free extending top button. The top housing is mounted so that the extending button is supported in cantilevered fashion. The button is sufficiently flexible to allow it to be depressed for button activation.

A control device for use on a working surface includes a bottom housing configured to be placed on the working surface; a top housing coupled with the bottom housing, the top housing including at least one key; an actuator disposed between the bottom housing and the top housing and coupled with the key; a switch disposed between the bottom housing and the top housing, wherein the switch is activated via application of an actuation force to the key; and an adjustment means configured to enable a user to adjust the actuation force required to activate the key.

Tunable keys for a control device

A housing for a control device includes an enclosed cavity configured to secure an optical detection system, including a light source and a sensor, and a face of the enclosed cavity configured to include a window to allow light from the light source to scatter light off of a surface and configured to allow reception of the scattered light on the sensor. In this configuration the housing is structured to prevent exposure of the optical detection system to external elements such as the surface. Also disclosed is a homodyning system for use with a coherent light source optical pointing device.

The present invention provides an input device such as a mouse which has a unique construction with integrated key plates and integrated side grips. In one embodiment, the input device comprises a housing, which includes a bottom case and an upper member disposed above the bottom case. The upper member includes a palm rest configured to support a user's palm and at least one key plate extending continuously from the palm rest to form a hinge between the at least one key plate and the palm rest without a gap. The key plate is movable in bending relative to the palm rest at the hinge to activate a key switch. The left side grip and the right side grip are formed on a single piece top case connected between the upper member and the bottom case. The left side grip and right side grip typically have concave surfaces.

An input device comprises a housing, and a user-movable roller having an exposed portion exposed from the housing. The roller is rotatable in a first rotational direction to generate first rotational signals. A first user-manipulable button is exposed from the housing for contact by a user and configured to simulate rotation of the roller in the first rotational direction and to generate the first rotational signals when pressed and maintained in a pressed position. In some embodiments, the roller is rotatable in a second rotational direction opposite from the first rotational direction to generate second rotational signals. A second user-manipulable button is exposed from the housing for contact by the user and configured to simulate rotation of the roller in the second rotational direction and generate the second rotational signals when pressed and maintained in a pressed position.

A roller for an input device extends through a slot in a top housing and is supported by a cantilevered arm. The roller is attached at the end of the arm and rotates about a shaft mounted on the cantilevered arm. The cantilevered arm is attached proximate the rear of the top housing, and thus is free to flex when the roller is depressed. As a result, when pressure is applied to the roller, the roller depresses through the slot in the top housing independently from the buttons on the top housing. The cantilevered arm has a spring force to bias the roller upward, eliminating the need for a return spring (lift spring).
