A workpiece transfer mechanism having a plurality of successive stations each provided with a fixture for locating and clamping a workpiece supporting pallet in a precise position for performing a machining operation on the workpiece. The transfer mechanism is of the lift and carry type so that the pallets are transported with a minimum amount of sliding wear on the locating surfaces. The precise location of the pallet is obtained by two clamping mechanisms.

A safety overload clutch wherein the driving and driven members are retained in driving relation by a primary roller on one of the members urged radially into a groove on the other member by an elastic flexure ring loaded by one or more secondary rollers on the one member positioned substantially diametrically opposite the primary roller. When the load on the driven member exceeds a predetermined value, the primary roller rolls out of its groove causing additional deflection of the flexure ring.

Safety overload clutch

A work piece transfer mechanism having a plurality of successive stations each provided with a fixture for locating and clamping a pallet in position for performing a machining operation on the work piece supported by the pallet. The locating and clamping means of each fixture are actuated by reciprocating bars. Preloaded compression springs are interposed between the bars and the locating and clamping means of each fixture for applying a relatively high force to the clamping members in response to a short stroke of the bars.
