Processes and devices by which a brittle material substrate may be edge formed and finished to simultaneously remove corresponding damage remaining on the edges in the areas formed by cutting and separation while imposing a desired edge profile and achieving a desired mechanical edge strength. Processes of the present disclosure may include a chemical and mechanical brush polishing process configured to shape and/or polish a surface of one or more thin substrates. A plurality of substrates may be arranged in a stacked configuration, and engineered interposer devices may be arranged between the stacked substrates. The interposers may provide between the substrates and may direct filament placement during brushing so as to guide material removal on the substrate edges. Substrate edge profile shapes, including symmetric and asymmetric profiles, may be formed by strategic manipulation of interposer properties including dimensions, mechanical features, material properties, and positioning.

Method and apparatus for edge finishing of high mechanical strength thin glass substrates

A method of forming a glass sheet comprises: (a) forming a ribbon of glass from molten glass with a pair of forming rollers; (b) reducing horizontal temperature variability of the ribbon of glass to be 10° C. or less across 80 percent of an entire width of the ribbon of glass before the ribbon of glass cools to a glass transition temperature; (c) controlling a cooling rate of the ribbon of glass while the ribbon of glass moves vertically downward within a setting zone such that the ribbon of glass has a first average cooling rate before the ribbon of glass cools to the glass transition temperature and a second average cooling rate after the ribbon of glass cools to the glass transition temperature, the first average cooling rate being less than the second average cooling rate; and (d) separating a glass sheet from the ribbon of glass.

Multi-tubular reactors for fluid processing incorporate reactor tubes containing thermally conductive monolithic catalyst structures with relative dimensions and thermal expansion characteristics effective to establish both a non-interfering or slidably interfering fit between the monolith structures and the reactor tubes at selected monolith mounting temperatures, and geometries at reactor operating temperatures such that the operating gaps between tubes and monoliths under the conditions of reactor operation do not exceed about 250 &#x3bc;m over tube sections where high heat flux to or from the monoliths is required.
