A method of adhering a magnetic layer to a plastic substrate of a magnetic recording medium, the method including depositing a SiN-containing layer on the plastic substrate and depositing a magnetic layer on the SiN-containing layer is disclosed. Also disclosed is a disc for a rotating recording system including a plastic substrate, a bilayer including a SiN-containing layer and a metal-containing layer on the plastic substrate, and magnetic media on the bilayer.

Magnetic media on a plastic substrate

Producing a servo pattern on a media involves rotating a master, and during a first revolution of the master, forming a first transition at a first radial position on the master, and forming a first transition at a second radial position. During a second revolution of the master, a second transition at the first radial position is formed, and a second transition at the second radial position is formed. By exposing individual servo burst transitions located at the first and second radial positions, in separate disk revolutions, only one of the magnetic transitions will inherit a particular deflection from a nominal radial position. If there are any mechanical disturbances, each magnetic transition will be randomly displaced from its nominal position, reducing the written-in run-out by &#x221a;n, where n is the number of magnetic transitions in a particular servo burst.

System and method for forming a servo pattern on a media master

A method of performing writable optical recording of a medium to form multilevel oriented nano-structures therein, comprises steps of providing a disc-shaped, writable recording medium having a planar surface; and encoding data/information in the medium by forming a plurality of multilevel nano-structured pits in the surface by scanning with a focused spot of optical energy to form at least one data track therein, including scanning the optical spot in a cross-track direction while rotating the disc about a central axis.

Embodiments of the invention generally provide an electron beam substrate processing system. In one embodiment, the present invention provides an electron beam substrate processing system where a spindle shaft used to rotate substrates during processing includes at least one optical encoder wheel assembly. The optical encoder wheel assembly is configured to provide rotational speed data signal to a rotational speed control system and a pattern generation clock circuit configured to a provide an angular pattern generator clock signal and to a pattern generator circuit. The pattern generation circuit is configured to control modulation of an electron beam used for substrate processing. In one aspect of the present invention, while the spindle shaft is rotated at a constant linear velocity, the pattern generation circuit controls the modulation of an electron beam such that written mark lengths are sized to be about constant in angular dimension.

The manufacture of magnetic disks for disk drives requires formation or servo tracks in a concentric pattern on the disk. Certain types of beam apparatuses for forming feature patterns on a disk shaped substrate, such as might be used in hard disk manufacture, however, provide spiral patterns. A ramp type deflection signal therefore is used to deflect the beam so as to form one circular pattern during each rotational cycle, and thereby convert the spiral pattern to a pattern comprising a series of circles.
