The system includes: (a) a hollow cylindrical body adapted to be mounted in a casting table, (b) an annular water baffle removably mounted in the body, the baffle having a central opening through which a forming ingot passes and the baffle providing a flow path for cooling water to flow radially inwardly from the body and discharge inwardly and downwardly against a forming ingot passing through the central opening, (c) an annular mould removably mounted in the body immediately above the water baffle having a central forming cavity for forming a metal ingot, the forming cavity having a smaller diameter than the central opening of the water baffle, (d) a feed inlet for molten metal comprising an insulating ring removably mounted within the body immediately above the mould, the outer diameter of the insulating ring being less than the diameter of the body, (e) a pressure ring removably mounted in the body in the annular gap between the body and the outer diameter of the insulating ring, and (f) a cover plate adapted to compress the components of the mould system together. The annular members are selectively replaced with ones of variable inner diameter or length depending upon the diameter of ingot desired and the composition of the metal being cast.

Modular mould system and method for continuous casting of metal ingots

A device is described for collecting molten metal break-outs which may occur during direct chill casting of light metal, e.g. aluminum or aluminum alloy ingots. The device includes a water-cooled mould of the cross sectional shape of the ingot desired, this mould having a vertically moveable base portion to support the ingot formed and being disposed above a pit for receiving the resultant casting and means for applying water onto the freshly solidified surface of the ingot as it emerges from the mould downwardly into the pit. The novel feature consists of at least one hollow container adjacent the side or sides of the ingot being formed, each container being packed with dry, highly heat-absorptive, finely divided material having a large surface to volume ratio. Each container has an open top positioned a short distance below the mould such as to catch a break-out of molten metal at the exit of the mould.

Device for collecting molten metal break-outs in casting of light metals

Aluminium and other non-ferrous metals are continuously cast in the form of a thin strip in a thickness range of 5-30 mm through an open-ended casting mould. The emerging strip is cooled in conventional manner by direct application of coolant as it emerges from the mould. The novel feature is that the solidified strip is gripped at its side edges at a station close to the exit of the mould and positively pulled out of the mould.
