A wc-disposable ostomy bag has walls made of three layers. The central layer is of an alkali-soluble/water-resistant material such as carboxylated acrylic polymer and is about 100.mu. thick. The inner layer, presented to the contents of the bag, is of a water-resistant, ordor-proof material such as polyvinylidene chloride and is between about 2 and 3.mu. thick. The outer layer is a non-woven material such as formed by cellulose fibres in a binder of aqueous polyacrylate, which is broken up when wetted by an alkaline liquid.

A wc disposable ostomy bag has a wall formed from an inner layer of polyethylene and an outer layer of polyvinyl alcohol. Two flexible layers of aluminum are located between the inner and outer layers to reduce odor transmission through the wall. The material of the walls may be formed by vapor depositing the aluminum layers on respective faces of the inner and outer layers and then laminating the inner and outer layers together with the aluminum layers facing one another. Alternatively, both aluminum layers may be deposited on the same one of the inner or outer layers with a thin non-metallic layer between them to prevent the aluminum layers having common grain boundaries.

A dilatation catheter has a shaft comprising a tube of braided material encapsulated over a major portion of its length in an outer coating of semi-rigid inelastic material. An outer coating of elastic material extends over a minor portion of the length of the shaft at or near its distal end. An inner coating of elastic material is provided over the entire length of the inside of the tube. The distal end portion of the catheter is thereby inflatable by pressure applied from within the shaft to form a balloon. Radio-opaque markers may be provided at each end of the inflatable portion.
