Enhanced paper debonding and softening are achieved by producing the paper from an aqueous suspension of fibers which contains one or more cationic agents and one or more compounds of the formula HO(X--O).sub.x --R--(O--Y).sub.y --OH wherein each X is ethylene, straight or branched propylene, or straight or branched butylene; x is 0 to 40; each Y is ethylene, straight or branched propylene, or straight or branched butylene; y is 0 to 40; the sum of (x+y) is 0 to 40; and R is saturated straight, branched or cyclic alkylene containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms.

Obtaining enhanced paper production using cationic compositions

Paper having a improved softness is obtained by adding to the fiber suspension from which the paper is made, a quaternized fatty acid trialkanolamine ester salt of the formula (I) ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 CO represents an acyl radical having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, independently of one another, represent hydrogen or R.sup.1 CO, (ALK) is ethyl or propyl, R.sup.4 represents an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.q H group, the sum of m, n and p represents O or numbers from 1 to 12, q represents numbers from 1 to 12 and X represents halide, alkylsulfate or alkylphosphate.
