Systems and methods for selectively updating or extending built in functionality on a mobile device are disclosed. The updates may be provided to selective portions of software such that the entire software does not need to be replaced. The update may be provided through an application marketplace that provides third party software applications for mobile devices. The software that the mobile device is shipped with may include a number of 'entry points,' which provide functionality that may be extended through the selective updates. When the entry point is triggered by user selection, a determination may be made whether code for the functionality is already available on the mobile device. If not, the mobile device may contact the application marketplace to determine if code is available to provide or extend the requested functionality.

A centralized service communicatively links an application provider to a plurality of different message forwarding services. The centralized service receives a request and authenticates the application provider associated with the request. Further, the centralized service delivers a message embodied by the request to a first message forwarding service with a first protocol and/or to a second message forwarding service with a second protocol different than the first protocol.

In order to allow a single user registered on a single local host or other machine to access multiple shared resources on a remote host, an aliasing mechanism is employed so that multiple concurrent connections can be established by the user to a single remote host, with each connection using a different identity. Each connection can therefore be used to access a different shared resource on the remote host. In some illustrative examples, a user's identifier such as his or her machine log-in identification may be associated with two or more resource sharing aliases. As a result, two or more resource sharing sessions can be established by the user with a single remote host, with each of the sessions using a different one of the aliases. The resource sharing sessions are usually established in accordance with a resource sharing protocol such as the Server Block Message (SBM) protocol.

Various technologies and techniques are disclosed for observing the real-world performance of components and using the collected data to improve other user experiences. Configuration data, usage data, and user experience data are collected for components on observed solution instances. The configuration data, usage data, and user experience data are analyzed to generate component diagnostic data that can be used to make recommendations to one or more advised solution instances as to how to correct a problem being experienced on the one or more advised solution instances. In one implementation, the component diagnostic data generated includes a reputation rating for each of the components.

An architecture is presented that automatically detects a location of a user and forwards messages to a pre-configured number associated with the detected location. A location system is provided that comprises a location component and a routing component. The location component publishes presence information of a mobile device. The presence information is associated with a physical location of the mobile device. Once the mobile device's presence information is published, the routing component automatically sets the call forwarding to the physical location for communication to a user of the mobile device. The message is routed to a pre-configured number associated with the physical location of the mobile device. A user of the mobile device pre-configures numbers associated with various frequently visited physical locations (e.g., home, club, etc.).

A system and method for aggregating and consolidating game notifications is described. In one aspect, game related notifications of different types, from different game sessions, from different games, and from different gaming platforms are aggregated and further consolidated, according to a set of consolidation rules, into a single consolidated environment. The consolidated environment may be projected to and managed from a variety of different gaming devices including mobile devices, gaming and media consoles, and personal computers.

Architecture that facilitates validation of a data mapping of data from a data source to a data target. There is included a signature generation component that generates a source signature of all or a portion of the data source and a target signature of all or a corresponding portion of the data target, and a sampling component that obtains a sample of the source data a corresponding sample of the target data. The data signatures and data samples are compared respectively and processed with a processing component to determine the status of the validation process.

Automatically detecting whether a local network that a computer is connected to is a public or private network by utilizing a trusted online service and/or heuristics is disclosed. Data produced as a result of performing one heuristic(s) in combination with data received from a trusted online service can be utilized to determine a level of confidence as to a type of network to which a client computer is connected. If the determined level of confidence exceeds a first level, the local network type for the client computer can automatically be set. If the determined level of confidence is less than the first level, but greater than a second level, a user can be prompted to classify the local network type with the determined local network type set as a default value. Techniques are also described for detecting whether or not two computers are connected to the same local area network.

Data usage of a messaging application is mitigated based on a location of the application on the display screen or a mode of a device. If the location of the application is in the foreground of the display, presence update information of a contact is periodically received or requested. If the application is in the background of the display longer than a predetermined interval, the presence update information of the contact is stopped. In some embodiments, if the device is in an OFF or a SUSPEND mode, contact presence updates are not received. When the device is in an ON mode or state, the presence updates are received or requested from a server or presence agent.

Mitigating data usage in messaging applications

A system for periodic and real-time processing of accounts. The system operates in a bulk mode and an error mode. A bulk component concurrently processes a set of eligible accounts with a set of dependent tasks, and a removal component removes one or more accounts from the eligible accounts if an error is associated therewith. In bulk mode, each task fetches only the required set of accounts/subscriptions/payment instruments for processing. In error mode (retry/reprocess mode), if an account encounters an error for a task in the bulk mode, the account drops is removed from bulk mode and becomes ineligible for fetching in any future bulk-mode task processing. Error-mode processing tests and processes all tasks sequentially for an errored account until the account state is in par with the accounts being processed by bulk mode. Then the account is removed from error mode processing and is picked up appropriately by bulk-mode processing.

Account related task processing

Implementations of configuring security mechanisms utilizing a trust system are described. In one implementation, a request to communicate is received at a protected device. Before permission to communicate can be granted, a list of trusted devices is accessed. If information, such as an identity or a secret, associated with the device sending the request to communicate correlates to information found on the list of trusted devices, then communication can be allowed. Otherwise, communication between the device and the protected device can be denied.
