A PCD structure comprises a first region and a second region adjacent the first region, the second region being bonded to the first region by intergrowth of diamond grains; the first region comprising a plurality of alternating strata or layers, each stratum or layer having a thickness in the range of around 5 to 300 microns. The second region comprises a plurality of strata or layers, one or more strata or layers in the second region having a thickness greater than the thicknesses of the individual strata or layers in the first region. The alternating layers or strata in the first region comprise first layers or strata alternating with second layers or strata, the first layers or strata being in a state of residual compressive stress and the second layers or strata being in a state of residual tensile stress.

Polycrystalline diamond structure

A polycrystalline superhard construction comprises a body of polycrystalline superhard material, and a substrate of hard material bonded thereto along an interface. The body of polycrystalline superhard material comprises a first region abutting the substrate along the interface and a second region bonded to the first region. The second region defines a rake face, a cutting edge, a chamfer and at least a part of a flank face, the cutting edge being defined by an edge of the flank face joined to the chamfer, the chamfer extending between the cutting edge and the rake face. The height of the chamfer in a plane parallel to the plane through which the longitudinal axis of the polycrystalline superhard construction extends is less than the thickness of the second region. The first region comprises a material having coarser grains than the second region. There is also disclosed a method of making the same.

Polycrystalline superhard construction

A polycrystalline super hard construction has a body of PCD material and a plurality of interstitial regions between inter-bonded diamond grains forming the PCD material. The body also has a first region substantially free of a solvent/catalyzing material which extends a depth from a working surface into the body of PCD material. A second region remote from the working surface includes solvent/catalyzing material in a plurality of the interstitial regions. A chamfer extends between the working surface and a peripheral side surface of the body of PCD material. The chamfer has a height which is the length along a plane perpendicular to the plane along which the working surface extends between the point of intersection of the chamfer with the working surface and the point of intersection of the chamfer and the peripheral side surface of the body of PCD material. The depth of the first region is greater than the height of the chamfer. A first length along a plane extending from the point of intersection of the chamfer and the peripheral side edge of the PCD body at an angle of between around 65 to 75 degrees to the interface between the first and second regions is between around 60% to around 300% of the depth of the first region.

Polycrystalline super hard construction and a method for making same

A cutter comprises a superhard construction, the cutter having a cutting edge defined by a rake face, and a flank extending therefrom. The cutter also has first and second regions, the first region abutting the second region along a boundary, the first region having a different material composition from the second region. At least the second region comprises superhard material, the material of the first region has a different coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) from the material of the second region. The second region extends around the peripheral edge of the first region defined by the boundary to form a collar therearound, the first region and/or the second region extending to and/or forming at least a part of the rake face.

Superhard cutter

A cubic nitride compact containing a polycrystalline mass of cubic boron nitride particles, present in an amount of at least 70 percent by volume, and a binder phase, which is metallic in character. In addition, a compact in which the binder phase is preferably superalloy in character.

A cubic nitride compact having a polycrystalline mass of cubic boron nitride particles, present in an amount of at least 70 percent by volume and a binder phase, which is metallic in character. In addition, a compact in which the binder phase is preferably superalloy in character.

A tip for a degradation tool, the tip comprising a PCD structure () joined to a cemented carbide substrate (); the PCD structure comprising a plurality of strata () arranged so that adjacent strata have alternating compressive and tensile stress states, adjacent strata comprising different PCD grades and being directly bonded to each other by inter-growth of diamond grains; each stratum having a mean thickness of at most 500 microns; the PCD structure defining a working end including a rounded conical apex () having a radius of curvature of 1.3 mm to 4 mm.

Tip for degradation tool and tool comprising same

A pick tool for degrading asphalt or rock, comprising a PCD element; the PCD element comprising a PCD structure () bonded to a cemented carbide support body () at an interface; the PCD structure comprising a first region () and a second region () adjacent the first region, the second region bonded to the first region by intergrowth of diamond grains; the first region () comprising a plurality of alternating strata (), each stratum having a thickness in the range of about 30 to 300 microns; the second region comprising a plurality of strata (), one or more strata in the second region () having a thickness greater than the thicknesses of the individual strata in the first region (), wherein the alternating strata in the first region () comprise first strata alternating with second strata, the first strata being in a state of residual compressive stress and the second strata being in a state of residual tensile stress.

Pick tool

A method for making a super-hard construction comprising a first structure comprising a first material joined to a second structure comprising a second material, in which the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and Young's moduli of the materials of each material are substantially different from each other. The method includes forming an assembly comprising the first material, the second material and a binder material arranged to be capable of bonding the first and second materials together, the binder material comprising metal; subjecting the assembly to a sufficiently high temperature for the binder material to be in the liquid state and to a first pressure at which the super-hard material is thermodynamically stable; reducing the pressure to a second pressure at which the super-hard material is thermodynamically stable, the temperature being maintained sufficiently high to maintain the binder material in the liquid state; reducing the temperature to solidify the binder material; and reducing the pressure and the temperature to an ambient condition to provide the super-hard construction.

Super-hard construction and method for making same

The present invention relates to PCBN compacts, more specifically, to a PCBN compact comprising cBN; a secondary hard phase selected from the transition metal carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides and mixtures thereof; a superalloy bonding phase; optionally an added transition metal aluminide; and optionally a small amount of a suitable oxide, preferably, aluminum oxide or yt-trium oxide. More particularly, the cBN compact comprises 30 to 70 volume % of a polycrystalline mass of cubic boron nitride particles; 70 to 30 volume % of a matrix phase, and a superalloy. The matrix phase comprises a secondary hard phase selected from a transition metal carbide, nitride, carbonitride and a mixture thereof.

Cubic boron nitride compact

The invention provides a tool component comprising a first layer of polycrystalline cBN material which has a rake (working) surface and a flank surface and comprises less than 70 vol % cBN; and a secondary layer across the rake surface or at least partially across the rake surface and comprising a refractory material and optionally a binder phase and optionally cBN, wherein the secondary layer has a higher resistance to crater formation than the first layer of cBN material and has a lower affinity towards iron than cBN.

A method of making polycrystalline CBN compacts, high in CBN content, is provided. The method includes making a powdered composition by subjecting a mixture of CBN, present in an amount of at least 80 volume percent of the mixture, and a powdered binder phase to attrition milling. This powdered mixture is subjected to conditions of elevated temperature and pressure suitable to produce CBN compacts.

A method of producing a tool insert which comprises a central metal portion having edge regions of superabrasive material bonded thereto and presenting cutting edges or points for the tool insert is disclosed. A body () having major surfaces on each of opposite sides thereof, each having spaced strips () of superabrasive material, typically abrasive compact such as PCBN or PCD, for example, separated by a metal region or regions, such as cemented carbide, is provided. Each superabrasive strip of one major surface is arranged in register with a superabrasive strip of the opposite major surface. Alternatively, each superabrasive strip extends from one major surface to the opposite major surface. The body is severed from one major surface to the opposite major surface along at least two sets of planes intersecting at or in the respective superabrasive strips to produce the tool insert.

Tool insert

A CBN compact comprises CBN and a matrix phase incorporating a secondary hard phase selected from TiCN, TiC, TiN and mixtures and solid solutions thereof and a maximum amount of titanium diboride where the XRD peak height of the (101) titanium diboride peak (after background correction) is less than 12% of the peak height of the (111) CBN peak.
