Method of making a write head core

A microwave assisted magnetic recording system includes a write pole that generates a write magnetic field, an element that generates a radio frequency assist magnetic field, and a recording medium that moves relative to the write pole. The recording medium is exposed to the radio frequency assist magnetic field before it is exposed to the write magnetic field. One possible element that generates the radio frequency assist magnetic field is an assist wire placed perpendicular to the write pole. Alternatively, the assist wire can be placed parallel to the write pole so that its radio frequency assist magnetic field couples with the write pole, which in turn generates its own coupled radio frequency magnetic field along with the write magnetic field.

Write head core

In an example, a method comprises aligning a central axis of a paddle portion on a write pole circuit to be substantially perpendicular to an adjacent magnetic surface, and bending a central axis of an extended tip portion relative to the central axis of the paddle portion. In another example, a transducer head comprises a write pole circuit having a paddle portion with a central axis, and an extended tip portion with a central axis, the central axis of the extended tip portion angled from the central axis of the paddle portion. In another example, a magnetic circuit comprises a write pole circuit having a paddle portion and an extended tip portion, the extended tip portion bending away from a central axis of the paddle portion, and a coil wrapping around the extended tip portion.

Write pole design

The present invention relates to a head having an air bearing surface for confronting the surface of a storage medium. The head includes a first pole that is spaced apart from a second pole. At least one non-magnetic spacer is positioned between the first pole and the second pole such that the first pole is magnetically decoupled from the second pole. In a further aspect, one or both of the first pole and the second pole can be elliptical in shape.

Recording head for reducing side track erasure

A disc drive head that includes a shared pole having high magnetic anisotropy layer which locally decreases the amplitude of dynamic field excitation of the shared pole at the write operation frequency to reduce side-writing of a disc media during a write operation.

Perpendicular writer with reduced side track writing

A magnetic recording head having an air bearing surface for confronting a surface of a rotating disc and comprising a pole tip and a generally rounded and substantially planar body attached to the pole tip is disclosed. The width of the pole tip defines a track width of data written to the rotating disc. The generally rounded shape of the top pole body is such that top pole magnetization gradually changes its direction and follows the edges of the body. Further, the pole tip has low remanence, gradual spin structure and no domain walls formed near the pole tip.

A magnetoresistive head assembly of the present invention includes a magnetoresistive sensor and an electrostatic discharge and electrical overstress protection circuit. The magnetoresistive sensor is capable of having conducted therethrough oppositely-directed first direction current and second direction current. The magnetoresistive sensor is sensitive to first direction currents in excess of a first predetermined value and to second direction currents in excess of a second predetermined value different than the first predetermined value. The electrostatic discharge and electrical overstress protection circuit is electrically connected to the magnetoresistive sensor for preventing only those first direction currents greater than the first predetermined value from flowing though the magnetoresistive sensor and only those second direction currents greater than the second predetermined value from flowing through the magnetoresistive sensor.

A slider includes a slider body having a trailing edge and a leading edge. The slider also includes a thin film structure deposited in layers on the trailing edge. The thin film structure includes a write transducer configured to read and write to a storage medium. The thin film structure also includes a non-thermally activated actuator at least partially formed with the write transducer and configured to move the write transducer relative to the trailing edge.

Structures for pole-tip actuation

The invention includes a magnetic recording head that has at least one structure or substructure that is made of a semiconductor material that protects the head from damage or destruction arising from stray current flow or unwanted electrostatic discharge during manufacture, assembly or use. The semiconductor material acts as a dissipative pathway to drain unwanted charges from the structure. The invention also includes a magnetic recording head that includes a substrate and a reader portion in the substrate, the substrate comprising a semiconductor material.

A magnetic head for perpendicular recording on double layer media with suppressed side writing and controlled write width is disclosed. The present invention reduces the problem of side writing and controls the write width of the writing element by providing a writing element with a trailing edge sized dimensionally larger than the leading edge, side shields, and specifically spaced writing gaps placed at various distances between the write element and the side shields, return poles, and the main pole.

Perpendicular magnetic recording head with nonmagnetic write gap greater than twice side shield gap distance

A magnetoresistive transducer includes a substrate and a magnetoresistive assembly. At least one bleed resistor couples the magnetoresistive assembly to the substrate. The bleed resistor has a relative large electrical resistance and provides a discharge path for accumulated charge. The arrangement effectively prevents electrostatic discharge damage to the sensor.

This invention discloses a circuit including a magnetoresistive sensor and a tunnel junction device coupled to the MR sensor to dissipate the energy associated with an electrical signal exceeding operational voltages for the sensor. The tunnel junction can include a first conducting layer, a second conducting layer, and a barrier material positioned between the first and the second conducting layer. The barrier material can be positioned so that the first conducting layer and the second conducting layer do not make contact. The MR sensor can be connected in parallel to the first and second conducting layer. The tunnel junction can be made of a material with a resistance more than the MR sensor's resistance at operational voltages and a resistance below the MR sensor's resistance at larger voltages. In another aspect of the invention, a method for fabricating the protected circuit including integrating a MR sensor on the circuit and coupling a tunnel junction to the MR sensor to dissipate an electrical signal exceeding operational voltages for the MR sensor is presented. The tunnel junction device can be fabricated during the fabrication of the circuit. The method can include fabricating the tunnel junction on the MR sensor.
