A method is provided for operating an inverter of an inverter-based power resource providing electric power to a grid through one or more transformers. The method includes measuring voltages associated with terminals on a selected primary winding and/or measuring voltages associated with terminals on a selected secondary winding; and injecting currents into the primary terminals of the selected primary winding during a fault condition based on the measured voltages being indicative of the type of fault occurring. Preferably the inverter is operated to emulate at least some characteristics of fault currents provided by a generator having rotating magnets or electrical windings. An apparatus is configured to operate in accordance with the method and includes an electrical switching device circuit having input terminals for an inverter-based power resource and output terminals for providing AC electric power to an electric power grid. An inverter controller operates the electrical switching device circuit.

Controlling an inverter to emulate synchronous generator under fault conditions

An electrical emulator system includes an emulator assembly comprising an emulator circuit board for emulating a component forming part of a modeled electrical system. The emulator circuit board includes an inverter mounted to the emulator circuit board, a set of input terminals electrically connected to the inverter, a set of output terminals electrically connected to the inverter and a processor electrically connected to the inverter and configured to control the inverter so as to provide emulation of a component of the modeled electrical system. A docking station includes a set of docking terminals for emulated line power. The docking station comprises guides to receive the emulator circuit board and align the set of input terminals and the set of output terminals to selected docking terminals of the set of docking terminals.

Electrical emulator system

One aspect of the disclosure includes a submodule topology for a modular multilevel converter. The submodule topology includes two electronic switches connected together with a first series connection terminal connecting the electronic switches in series, the series connected switches being connected in parallel with two capacitors connected together with a second series connection terminal connecting the capacitors in series. A bidirectional electronic switch connects the first series connection terminal with the second series connected terminal. An output voltage is obtained across the first series connected terminal and a common terminal formed by the parallel connection of the series connected switches with the series connected capacitors.

Modular converter with multilevel submodules

This patent document discloses power electronic transformers having a high-frequency link. An example apparatus include a transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding, the transformer is configured to receive a primary power signal having a first frequency, a primary converter configured to selectively oscillate polarity of the primary windings with respect to the secondary windings at a second frequency, the second frequency substantially substantially higher than the first frequency, a secondary converter coupled to the secondary winding, the secondary converter configured to provide a load power signal using a high frequency power signal generated using the secondary winding. The secondary converter can be configured to reduce current flow in the primary winding when the polarity of the primary winding is switched, the reduced current follow is configured to reduce disturbances resulting from leakage inductance of the transformer.

A matrix converter includes a plurality of switches that electrically connect a multi-phase input voltage source to a multi-phase load; and a controller to output pulse-width modulated (PWM) switching signals to control the switches to produce a multi-phase output voltage from the multi-phase input voltage source. The controller outputs the PWM switching signals by modulating a carrier signal with a time-varying signal having a frequency determined from a desired output frequency for the output voltage.

A DC-DC power converter includes input terminals and a rectifier circuit. An additional circuit is connected to the input terminals and the rectifier. A method and apparatus for operation of an electrical power conversion system having first and second partial systems connected in parallel. Each partial system includes an inductor and an electronic switch for controlling electrical power transferred through the partial systems. A control circuit controls operation of the electronic switches. The control circuit includes devices for generating a first control signal error and a second control signal error as a function of a reference and current flowing in the inductors. Hysteresis devices receive the first and second control signal errors and provide first and second outputs, respectively, upon intersection of the first and second control signal errors with selected threshold values. Delay devices coupled to the electronic switches receive and delay transmission of the first and second outputs to the electronic switches.

A method and apparatus for controlling power transferred and regulating voltage in a multi-phase transmission line includes generating a first plurality of voltages, a second plurality of voltages displaced in phase from the first plurality of voltages, and a third plurality of voltages displaced in phase from the first and second plurality of voltages. The first, second and third plurality of voltages are selectively connected in series in each line of the multi-phase transmission line.

Power transfer controller

A system and method for providing harmonic currents to a harmonic generating load connected to a multiphase alternating current power system includes a zig-zag transformer and a current generator. The zig-zag transformer is electrically connected to the multiphase alternating current power system. The current generator is electrically connected between a neutral of the zig-zag transformer and a neutral return path of the multiphase alternating current power system. The current generator injects a harmonic current into the neutral of the zig-zag transformer which in turn, reduces the harmonic currents provided to the load from the multiphase alternating current power system.

System and method for providing harmonic currents to a harmonic

An apparatus and method for reducing distortion currents present in an alternating current power system supplying power to a load which includes a passive filter and an active filter. In a first embodiment, the passive filter is operably connected to the power system across the load by a switching device. An active filter is then connected across the switching device and operated to draw a current equal to the current through the passive filter. The active filter and the passive filter are thereby connected in series across the load. The active filter is controlled to draw a fundamental frequency component and to provide distortion currents required by the load. In a second embodiment, the active filter is connected in parallel with a first circuit, the parallel combination of which is connected in series with a second circuit across the load. Besides providing distortion currents required by the load, the active filter is controlled to draw a current substantially in phase with the voltage across it in order to provide damping.

Hybrid filter for reducing distortion in a power system

A circuit is provided for generating a current that is a harmonic of the frequency of the utility system and which is of a selected amplitude and phase to reduce the total harmonic distortion of a system that converts alternating current to direct current, or vice versa. The DC signal is sampled and by controlling switches, a sinusoidal current at the desired harmonic is generated, and is provided to a neutral of a transformer that injects this current into the multiphase AC system used by the utility in a very low cost, easily controlled, and highly effective manner. In a second embodiment, the injection current is provided to a common junction of a magnetic device.

System for reducing harmonics by harmonic current injection

A circuit is provided for generating a current that is a harmonic of the frequency of the utility system and which is of a selected amplitude and phase to reduce the total harmonic distortion of a system that converts alternating current to direct current, or vice versa. The DC signal is sampled and by controlling switches, a sinusoidal current at the desired harmonic is generated, and is provided to impedance network that injects this current into the multiphase AC system used by the utility in a very low cost, easily controlled, and highly effective manner. The impedance network comprises a single inductor and capacitance connected in series through each of the phases of the utility, with the current signal having an amplitude that is selected to substantially eliminate harmonics which cause high distortion of the utility signal.

System and method for reducing harmonic currents by current injection

A standby power supply system is provided for supplying normal AC power to a critical load from an AC power source during normal operating conditions, and for supplying emergency AC power to the load during failure of the AC power source. During normal operation, the standby power supply system actively neutralizes undesirable harmonic components in the input current drawn by the load. The standby power supply system includes a power conversion device having a DC side coupled to a back-up power source and an AC side in parallel with the load and the AC source. A harmonic distortion sensor senses a harmonic distortion current component of a load current drawn by the load during normal operating conditions. A controller is responsive to the harmonic distortion sensor for causing the power conversion device to produce a harmonics neutralizing current to substantially neutralize the harmonic distortion current component produced by the load. A method is also provided for supplying AC power to a load during normal and emergency operating conditions.
