Unique apparatuses and methods for scraping deposits from a piston as the piston moves in an upstroke direction and a downstroke direction. An engine assembly includes a cylinder having a cylinder bore, a piston having a crown end, wherein the piston is disposed in the cylinder bore and configured to move in an upstroke direction and a downstroke direction relative to the cylinder bore. The piston includes a first land positioned adjacent the crown end. An antipolishing ring is disposed within the cylinder bore. The antipolishing ring has an outer annular surface and an inner annular surface, the inner annular surface has one or more protrusions configured to scrape the first land when the piston moves in the upstroke direction and the downstroke direction. The protrusions are also configured to scrape the first land when the piston has secondary or lateral motion.

Various embodiments of the invention relate to an apparatus and method for assembling a cylinder for an internal combustion engine. The cylinder includes a cylinder liner with a liner wall having an outer diameter and a flange extending radially outward from the liner wall at a superior end of the liner wall. The flange includes a fillet region adjacent to the liner wall having an inferior surface. The inferior surface has a contour defined at least partially by a non-circular profile. The contour defines a minimum diameter that is greater than or equal to an outer diameter of the liner wall. The non-circular profile is optionally defined by a slanted ellipse.

A piston cooling nozzle including a nylon body having a hub and a pair of integral legs extending from the hub and a tube for delivering coolant to a piston. The pair of legs are formed relative to the hub and the tube to ensure that when the body is mounted to an engine block, the legs engage a cylinder liner to thereby position the tube between a skirt of the piston and a connecting rod coupled to the piston.
