A modular drill includes a shank, a retaining pin, a cutting insert, and a locking pin. The shank includes a shank bore having an axial direction leading into the shank bore, and a locking pin opening. The retaining pin includes a retaining pin shaft axially movable positioned with the shank bore, the retaining pin shaft having a locking pin engagement surface. The retaining pin includes a retaining pin head having a retaining pin head engagement surface. The cutting insert includes a cutting insert passage for passing the retaining pin head therethrough; and a cutting insert cavity having a cutting insert engagement surface for engaging the retaining pin head engagement surface. The locking pin is for positioning within the locking pin opening and engaging with the locking pin engagement surface to force the retaining pin shaft to move further in the axial direction.

Modular drill, method of assembly thereof, and cutting insert

A cutting insert includes a tool carrier having a body with a pocket, and a cutting tip affixed to the pocket by brazing. The pocket is defined by a vertical back wall and a horizontal support surface. A notch is formed at the intersection between the vertical back wall and the horizontal support surface. The notch has a non-planar first portion proximate the vertical back wall and formed with a radius, R, and a planar second portion extending between the first portion and the horizontal support surface and formed at an inclination angle with respect to a plane parallel to the horizontal support surface of the pocket. The design of the notch significantly reduces thermal stress and eliminates the formation of cracks in the pocket of the tool carrier when using an injection molding process to form the tool carrier.

An aqueous slurry that is useful upon being spray dried for the formation of a powder of hard material. The aqueous slurry includes starting powder components of the hard material. The slurry further includes an oxidation inhibitor, a surfactant in an amount between about 0.05 weight percent and about 0.30 weight percent of the weight of the starting powder components of the hard material, a binder, a defoamer and water in an between about 15 weight percent and about 30 weight percent of the weight of the weight of the starting powder components of the hard material. The aqueous slurry has a percent solids value that is between about 70 percent and about 85 percent.

A cutting insert having a base portion structured to be coupled to a tool body, the base portion having a leading end, a trailing end, and a mounting face extending therebetween. A number of cutting portions extend from the base portion opposite the mounting face. Each cutting portion of the number of cutting portions includes a cutting face disposed adjacent the leading end of the base. The cutting face having an angled portion disposed at a first angle with respect to a reference plane oriented parallel to the leading end and perpendicular to the mounting face. The cutting face also having a curved portion disposed between the angled portion and the base portion.

A toolholder assembly has a pocket adapted to receive a double-sided on-edge cutting insert with wiper facets. A pocket has at least two sides and supports pads extending from each of the at least two sides, wherein the support pads contact the wiper facets of the cutting insert when the cutting insert is mounted within the pocket.
