Systems and methods are provided for device-free motion detection and presence detection within an area of interest. A plurality of nodes, configured to be arranged around the area of interest, form a wireless network. The plurality of nodes transmit wireless signals as radio waves and receive transmitted wireless signals. The received signal strength (RSS) of the transmitted wireless signals between the plurality of nodes are measured and a value is reported. A computing device receives the reported values for the measured RSS and tracks the reported values over time. The computing device processes the reported values using an aggregate disturbance calculation to detect motion and presence within the area of interest. The computing device may notify notification device of a detected disturbance within the area of interest.

Systems and methods of device-free motion detection and presence detection

Systems and methods are disclosed for the use of sensor links in a network to estimate the breathing rate of a breathing subject within a structure, estimate the location of the subject within the structure, and detect if the subject is breathing. The structure may be a bed, a building, or a room in the building. The received signal strength of the sensor links is obtained and is then used in various breathing models to determine the breathing rate estimation, the location estimation, and the breathing detection.

Monitoring breathing via signal strength in wireless networks

The ability of a receiver to determine when a transmitter has changed location is important for energy conservation in wireless sensor networks, for physical security of radio tagged objects, and for wireless network security in detection of replication attacks. In embodiments of the present invention, a measured temporal link signature is determined to uniquely identify the link between a transmitter and a receiver. The temporal link signature is an impulse response of a transmitted signal from the transmitter over a channel between the transmitter and a receiver over a channel. When the transmitter changes location, or if an attacker at a different location assumes the identity of the transmitter, the proposed link distinction methodology reliably detects the change in the physical channel. This detection can be performed at a single receiver or collaboratively by multiple receivers.

Robust location distinction using temporal link signatures

A new methodology for detecting, localizing, tracking, and counting objects. The method for state/space estimation includes arranging in a space a first pair of radio frequency sensors in a network of nodes. The first pair of radio frequency sensors is calibrated to determine a first fading condition associated with the first pair of radio frequency sensors. A signal strength of at least one signal sent between the first pair of nodes is measured. A first likelihood model is determined based on the first fading condition. A first posterior distribution is estimated based on the signal strength of the at least one signal using the first likelihood model for purposes of determining object information within the space.

Statistical inversion method and system for device-free localization in RF sensor networks

A new methodology to exchange a random secret key between two parties. The diverse physical characteristics of the wireless medium and device mobility are exploited for secure key exchange. Unique physical characteristics of wireless channels between the two devices are measured at different random locations. A function of these unique characteristics determines the shared secret key between the two devices.
