A propulsion arrangement for a marine vessel is disclosed. The propulsion arrangement comprises an engine () for propelling the vessel and an electrical machine () coupled to the engine. The electrical machine is arranged to supply onboard electrical power for the vessel. A control unit () controls the electrical machine such that the electrical machine is selectively operable as a generator or a motor. The control unit and the electrical machine are arranged such that the electrical machine when operating as a motor can supplement the power of the engine while the engine is in operation. In one embodiment, the control unit and the electrical machine are arranged to provide active damping of the engine torque.

Propulsion arrangement

The stator () of a permanent magnet axial flux alternator comprises two annular stator components which are each wound with a respective two phase winding arrangement (). Each of the two phase winding arrangements () is wound so that there is no mutual inductance between the windings of each phase. Each phase of the two phase winding arrangements () wound on the two stator components has a high internal impedance and is for energising a respective high intensity lamp of a light tower.

Alternator assembly

A method of controlling connection of an AC power output to a load and power supply grid. The power output is produced by an AC power generating system which includes an AC/AC converter and is independently operable to supply power to the load. The converter is controlled in accordance with a reference generated within the system. To connect the power output to the power supply grid and to supply the load, the reference is replaced by another reference derived from the voltage of the grid, so that the converter is controlled by that other reference, when the power output is connected to the grid and supplies power required by the load. When the power output is disconnected from the grid or loss of the grid voltage occurs, the reference replaces the other reference, and the power generating system operates independently continuing to supply power required by the load without interruption.

Method of controlling connection of a supply of AC power to a load and to a power supply grid

An electrical power supply system including an engine driven permanent magnet generator () operable to produce a variable voltage and high frequency output which is converted by a series train AC/AC conversion circuit () into a fixed voltage and relatively low frequency AC output for supply through a trip switch (-) to an external load (-). A bypass circuit including a pair of normally-closed parallel connected oppositely biased thyristors (-) is connected between the generator output and the output of the AC/AC conversion circuit ().

Electrical power supply system and a permanent magnet generator for such a system

A rotor disc assemblyfor an AC machine includes a rotor disc, permanent magnetsand a spider. The rotor dischas a circumferential lipprojecting from a surface thereof. The permanent magnetsare positioned in a circular array on the surface of the rotor disc, with constant angular pitch, and so as to lie against the lip. The spider includes an annular base portion, with a plurality of armsprojecting radially outwards therefrom. The spideris fixed to the surface of the rotor discsuch that each armis between and abuts a respective juxtaposed pair of the permanent magnets. The armsand the membersare each provided with cooperating wedge-shaped cross sections such that each armconstrains the respective two permanent magnetsboth axially and tangentially on the surface of the rotor disc.

Method of fixing unmagnetized magnetizable members to a rotor disc and a rotor disc

A rotor disc for an electrical machine is disclosed. The rotor disc comprises a series of magnetisable members arranged in a circumferential series on a surface thereof and against peripheral retaining structure of the disc. The disc also includes a retainer fixable to the surface and arranged for assisting in retaining the members at least axially on the surface when so fixed. The retainer is arranged to abut at least one of a substantially circumferentially and substantially tangentially extending, radially inner part of each member and thereby to provide the axial retention.

Rotor disc for an electrical machine and a retainer

A generating set includes an engie driven generator (PGM) having two sets of stator windings (Ga and Gb). A bi-directional AC/DC converter (BCo) has its AC input connected to a junction between the two sets of stator windings (Ga and Gb) and its DC input connected to a number of the generator (PGM) is converted into an intermediate DC link by a convertor (Col) to produce an output for a load Lo. In normal operation of the system, an emf generated in one (Ga) of the sets of stator windings is rectified by the bi-direcitonal converter (BCo) to charge the energy storages (ESI-ESN) whilst the remainder of the generator output is fed through the converter to the load (Lo). In the event of a stepped increase in the load demand, the bi-directional converter (BCo) is operated to feed energy from the storage devices (ESI-ESN) to the stator windings (Ga) of the generator (PGM) to impart a driving torque to the generator rotor to accelerte the rotor to meet the increased load demand. The energy stored in the storages devices (ESI-ESN) could be used to start the engine (EN).

Electrical machine and an electrical power generating system

A toroidal AC generator includes an outer casing and an annular stator core of ferromagnetic material which is encased in a hollow annular cover of plastics material and which is fixed to the casing between the discs of a twin disc rotor. Each rotor disc carries a circular array of alternately polarised permanent magnets which face the stator core. The hollow annular cover is a two-part moulding and is formed of radially inner and outer ring portions which are joined by circular arrays of radial ribs which extend across the opposed radial faces of the annular core and form open-ended radial passages for the electrical phase windings which are wound around the cover. The ribs project radially beyond the radially outer ring portion and form hooks around which a winding may be retained temporarily during winding.

Toroidal electrical machine and an annular winding carrier therefor

An electric power generating set which automatically varies its speed to match load variations at any time includes an engine driven generator G which provides a positive, Ga and a negative, Gb AC output voltage each of which is rectified by a respective rectifier Re , Re . Each rectifier Re ,Re has one terminal connected to a common neutral line N. The DC output voltage of each rectifier Re , Re is boosted in a respective booster circuit which also has one terminal connected to the neutral line N. The combined output of the two booster circuits, Va&plus;Vb is fed to an Inverter IN which converts it to the AC power output of the generating set. A DC load current between the booster circuits and the inverter IN is monitored and used to provide a speed demand feedback signal Srs to the speed control of the engine EN. The inverter IN is controlled so that the voltage and frequency of the AC power output of the generating set are reduced in response to a fall in the intermediate DC voltage Va&plus;Vb that is fed to the inverter IN and which is monitored by a voltage sensor Vsab.
