Described are a compressor driving apparatus and a refrigerator including the same. The compressor driving apparatus includes: switching elements; an inverter; an output current detector for detecting an output current flowing through a motor; and an inverter controller for controlling the inverter. The inverter controller controls the piston so that one end of the piston is fixed at a first position spaced apart from the discharge unit at stroke of the piston during a first period, controls the piston to collide with the discharge unit when a change rate in an operation rate or a position error of the compressor is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, and controls the piston so that the one end of the piston is fixed at a second position spaced apart from the discharge unit at stroke of the piston during a second period after the collision of the piston.

A linear compressor includes, a cylinder, a piston configured to reciprocate inside the cylinder, a motor configured to supply driving force to the piston, a detector configured to detect a motor current and a motor voltage that are applied to the motor, and a controller configured to estimate a stroke of the piston based on the motor current and the motor voltage and to determine a phase difference between the stroke and the motor current. The controller is configured to detect operation information of the linear compressor, determine whether to perform a resonance operation based on the operation information, and control operation of the motor to allow the phase difference to be within a preset phase range.

A linear compressor and a method for controlling a compressor are provided. The compressor may include a piston that reciprocates within a cylinder, a linear motor that supplies a driving force to the piston, a discharge device through which a refrigerant compressed in the cylinder by the reciprocating motion of the piston is discharged, a pressure changing device that changes a variation rate of pressure applied to the piston before the piston reaches a virtual discharge surface (VDS) during the reciprocating motion, to prevent collision between the piston and the discharge device. The virtual discharge surface may be formed on at least a portion of the discharge device facing a compression space within the cylinder.

Such a control module may increase a maximum freezing capacity by appropriately (or optimally) designing (setting) an initial value of a piston in a driving area or an operation area (or a high-efficiency driving area) of a compressor by considering the efficiency aspect, and executing an asymmetric operation in a high-load driving area (or a high freezing capacity driving area).
