A DEF quality sensor integrated into a DEF tank with removable control circuitry preferably includes a housing and control circuitry. The housing preferably includes a base housing portion and a detachable cover. A sensor opening is formed through a bottom of the DEF tank to receive an outside perimeter of the base housing portion. The base housing portion is sealed to the DEF tank with any suitable sealant. Most of the base housing portion is located inside the DEF tank. The detachable cover is located outside the DEF tank. The detachable cover includes the control circuitry. The detachable cover may be secured to a bottom of the base housing portion with any suitable attachment device or method. The improved removable DEF quality sensor includes the benefits of decreased replacement part storage capacity for parts supplies as well as improved ease of serviceability for repair.

Estimating soot comprises connecting exhaust pipe to engine, exhaust pipe has diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter. Fuel injector is connected to exhaust pipe upstream from diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter. Delta exhaust pressure sensor measures difference in exhaust pressure at inlet and outlet to diesel particulate filter. Controller is connected to fuel injector and to delta exhaust pressure sensor. Controller determines when to conduct active regeneration of diesel particulate filter based on estimated amount of soot accumulated therein. Controller, in first regeneration mode, causes fuel injector to inject fuel at first rate into exhaust stream, and re-evaluates soot accumulated within diesel particulate filter under increased volumetric flow of exhaust stream. Controller, in second regeneration mode, causes fuel injector to inject fuel at second rate, larger than first rate, into exhaust stream to combust soot trapped in diesel particulate filter.

A system and a method for reducing band clamp failure on a multi-piece canister having an at least one first section coupled to an at least one second section by a band clamp, the system and method comprising a band clamp cover, wherein the band clamp cover comprises a cover first section and a cover second section, the cover first section is coupled to the cover second section at a first end by a hinge, the cover first section is coupled to the cover second section at a second end by removable fastener, the band clamp cover having a shape of the multi-piece cannister, wherein the band clamp cover has a channel that encompasses the band clamp.

System for reducing band clamp failure

Vehicle exhaust system uses delta pressure based estimation of accumulated soot within a diesel particulate filter. The exhaust system has a diesel oxidation catalyst and a diesel particulate filter. A fuel injector is connected upstream from the diesel oxidation catalyst and the diesel particulate filter. A delta pressure sensor measures difference in pressure at inlet and outlet of the diesel particulate filter. A controller determines when to regenerate the diesel particulate filter based on an estimated amount of soot. The controller, in a first regeneration mode, causes the fuel injector to inject fuel at a first rate into the exhaust stream, and to re-evaluate amount of soot accumulated within the diesel particulate filter under increased volumetric flow. The controller, in a second regeneration mode, causes the fuel injector to inject fuel at a second rate into the exhaust stream in order to combust soot trapped in the diesel particulate filter.

A Diesel Emissions Fluid (DEF) Thawing arrangement and method is provided for use with a vehicle having an engine, an Engine Control Module (ECM), an exhaust system, and a Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) catalytic device. A DEF injection system is connected to the exhaust system and to the ECM. A DEF tank is connected to the DEF injection system, and is provided with a Urea Quality Sensor (UQS). A coolant loop is connected to the engine and has a Coolant Control Valve (CCV) connected to a control module, and a coolant to DEF heat exchanger. A DEF temperature sensor and an ambient temperature sensor are connected to the control module. The control module is configured to trigger a CCV stuck open fault when the DEF tank temperature exceeds the ambient temperature by a threshold amount for a period of time.

Aspects of the disclosure relate to providing an EGR cooler including a barrier layer applied to EGR cooler components while allowing sufficient heat transfer between exhaust gases and the cooling medium. A barrier layer may be applied onto particular surfaces of the EGR cooler components to prevent deposition of hydrocarbons or soot on the EGR cooler components. In some arrangements, the barrier layer may comprise a refractory solid oxide. In other arrangements, an EGR cooler may comprise a catalytic barrier layer. The catalytic barrier layer may include a refractory solid oxide and a platinum group metal or mixed metal oxide to prevent accumulation of varnish material deposited onto EGR cooler components.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid is metered into an engine exhaust gas aftertreatment system having a close coupled SCR catalyst and a main SCR catalyst. The DEF is injected into two injector locations, one upstream of the close coupled SCR catalyst and another upstream of the main SCR catalyst, the quantity of DEF in each injector being based on primarily the temperature at the main SCR catalyst and the mass flow of the NOx through the aftertreatment system. This method of injection enables a relatively better fuel economy outcome while meeting the regulated tailpipe NOemission levels and the NO formation limits.

A virtual diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) quality monitor repeatedly performs an intrusive test for disclosing use of adulterated DEF by injecting a controlled quantity of DEF into a diesel engine exhaust aftertreatment system upstream of an SCR catalyst while the engine operates and then processing certain data obtained from the test.

A method for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine determines an estimated NOx value as a function of at least one engine operating parameter. The method also determines an actual NOx value using a NOx sensor positioned in an exhaust gas stream of the internal combustion engine. The method detects at least one condition indicative of whether or not the actual NOx value is accurate. The actual NOx value is used for controlling engine operation when the at least one condition indicates that the actual NOx value is accurate, while the estimated NOx value is used for controlling engine operation when the at least one condition indicates that the actual NOx value is inaccurate.

A method for determining the degree of saturation of a solid ammonia storage material in a storage unit includes activating a heater to release ammonia from the storage material until the pressure of the storage unit reaches a predetermined pressure. The method then deactivates the heater and determining a decay rate of the pressure of the storage unit while the heater is deactivated. The method estimates the degree of saturation of the ammonia storage medium in response to the decay rate. According to some embodiments, determining the decay rate may include measuring the time required for the pressure of the storage unit to drop from a first pressure threshold to a second pressure threshold.

Ammonia estimation method

Methods are provided for estimating the NOcontent of exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine. The method includes determining one or more operating parameters. The method further includes applying the determined operating parameter(s) to a global NOmodel. The global NOmodel may be derived using a plurality of steady state data points relating to local NOemission models. The steady state data points may be derived using a plurality of set and variable operating parameters. The global NOmodel allows for prediction of the engine-out NOcontent of exhaust gas in real time and without a NOsensor, even if engine operating parameters change.

A system for storage and dosing of ammonia includes solid ammonia storage material capable of binding and releasing ammonia reversibly by adsorption/absorption. The system includes a start-up storage unit and a main storage unit, both of which hold ammonia storage material. A start-up heating device is arranged to heat the start-up storage unit to generate gaseous ammonia by thermal desorption from the solid storage material. A main heating device arranged to heat the main storage unit to generate gaseous ammonia by thermal desorption from the solid storage material. A controller modulates operation of the heating devices such that the main and start-up heating devices are not simultaneously activated.

A system for mixing ammonia (reductant) with engine exhaust includes an exhaust flow created by a vehicle engine, an ammonia feed line passing into the exhaust flow, an injector connected to the feed line and positioned within the exhaust flow, the injector having at least one port for discharging ammonia into the exhaust flow, and a mixing plate positioned within the exhaust flow downstream of the ammonia injector and stabilizing at least one of either the feed line and the injector. An aspect of the invention is to stabilize the injector by attaching the mixing plate to the feed line to provide such stability. Alternatively or additionally, the mixing plate is attached to the injector to stabilize. The feed line may even pass through the mixing plate.

A trapped soot estimator () estimates soot trapped in the diesel particular filter by repeatedly executing an algorithm that calculates a data value for total soot trapped using Kalman filter processing () whose gain is controlled by at least one engine operating parameter.

A method of providing hydrocarbons to an engine exhaust for regenerating a diesel particulate filter within an exhaust system of a diesel engine. A mass flow rate of exhaust gas within an exhaust system is determined. A mass flow rate of oxygen within the exhaust gas entering the diesel oxidation catalyst is determined. A set point indicative of an allowable mass flow rate of oxygen within the exhaust gas exiting the diesel oxidation catalyst is received. A hydrocarbon threshold that may be injected into the exhaust system is calculated. Hydrocarbons are injected into the exhaust system upstream of the diesel oxidation catalyst, wherein the injected hydrocarbons do not exceed the calculated threshold amount of hydrocarbons.
