Network-connected (i.e., 'smart') containers are described herein that include an electronic display on which personalized information can be presented. For example, the electronic display (and other necessary components, such as memory, processors, and communication modules) can be integrated into the cap or the body of a container, which holds a skin care product (e.g., a medication or a personal care product, such as a cosmetic) that is applied by the user as part of a skin care regimen. More specifically, a smart container can include an electronic display that presents relevant information to a user for review. Such information can include the name of the skin care product, textual instructions for complying with a skin care regimen, animations illustrating how to apply the skin care product, user information, messages (e.g., text messages delivered via a cloud service), notifications, and device information (e.g., battery status and network connectivity status).

Arrangements are provided for 'smart' functionality such as for tracking medication use to determine adherence, without requiring smart containers therefor. A bin is provided for receiving used/empty containers, packaging, or other discarded material incidental to the use of the medication. Sensors generate signals when the material is deposited within the bin, and a processor determines whether those signals correspond with the incidental material of interest. The processor also may identify when signals correspond with other, spurious material deposited in the bin. Responsive to a positive correspondence, a contextual event such as deposition of a used vial is stored, displayed, communicated, and/or otherwise registered. Contextual events, times therefor, lack of same, etc. are considered to provide authenticated determinations of adherence to a medication regimen. Authenticated adherence determinations may support medication adherence monitoring, medication adherence itself, and/or medication outcomes for patient treatment, clinical trials, etc.

Method and apparatus for smart medication authentication through considering non-smart incidental materials

Various of the disclosed embodiments enable adherence to a medication regimen or a healthcare regimen to be monitored using a wearable system. The wearable system can be used to monitor a user's activities by recording activities using a camera that is placed at the anterior part of the user's wrist. The camera, or another sensor, can detect, identify, and verifying movements or gestures of the hand or fingers. A gesture may be a particular hand position, finger movement, or combination of finger movements that are indicative of performance of an activity required as part of a medication or healthcare regimen. The camera can generate a recording of an activity, and the wearable system or a distinct computing device can then analyze the recording and determine compliance to the medication or healthcare regimen based on what action(s), if any, were identified in the recording.

Wearable system for healthcare management

Various embodiments relate to systems and methods for monitoring adherence to a medication regimen through the use of a smart medication container. The container can include an electronic display that presents relevant information, such as dosage and/or medication information, instructions, user information, messages, notifications, and device information (e.g., battery status, network connectivity status). A pair of conductive elements positioned on either side of the container's opening can be configured to continually measure capacitance in order to identify when contents (e.g., pills) leave the container. More than one pair of conductive elements may be used to improve accuracy and reduce the effects of noise. A processor is able to analyze the capacitance data and determine whether medication has been dispensed from the container and, if so, how much medication was dispensed. A computer system can then compare the results to a planned medication regimen to determine a state of compliance.
