A positioning method comprising: solving a geometric algebraic expression that relates: position vectors for a plurality of antennas relative to a shared origin, a putative position vector for the shared origin and phase information measured at each of the plurality of antennas, to determine a position vector for the shared origin; and positioning an apparatus using the determined position vector for the shared origin.

A method comprising: receiving first information for defining a first algebraic function that relates a time variable to a first mapped variable; using the function to convert a time variable value to a first value of the first mapped variable e.g. s; converting the first value of the first mapped variable to a second value of a second mapped variable e.g. U; and positioning a satellite by converting the second value of the second mapped variable value to a position value that positions a satellite.

Sharing a frequency band between different radio communications protocols

An animal electronic data collecting device is disclosed which includes a radio transmitter and a radio receiver, a processor for controlling operation of the device, and memory for storing information including a first identifier associated with the device. The processor is arranged to transmit a signal, using the radio transmitter, and to receive, using the radio receiver, one or more signals, each representing a second identifier from other devices, and the processor is arranged to store in the memory each second identifier. The default operating condition of the device is for the radio receiver to be in a receive condition and, upon receipt of a wakeup call, the processor is arranged to place the radio transmitter into a transmit condition.

A first transceiver () can position itself by forming an ad hoc network () of transceivers which assist the first transceiver in acquiring its position. A dedicated infrastructure such as GPS satellites is not required. The first transceiver (), once it has acquired its position, can be involved in a network () by another transceiver () to assist in the positioning of that transceiver. The acquisition of the position may involve factors such as the trustworthiness of the transceivers in the network and/or the positions of transceivers with which the first transceiver cannot directly communicate.

Position acquisition

A first transceiver can position itself by forming an ad hoc network of transceivers which assist the first transceiver in acquiring its position. A method for operation of a receiver of a spread spectrum system. The method includes generating in the receiver an expected signal, the expected signal being a function of time and frequency correlating the received time and frequency of the received signal with time and frequency shifted parameters of the expected signal deriving a computational expression indicative of the value of the correlation at a point displaced in time by the time offset plus the time shift and displaced in frequency by the frequency offset plus the frequency shift, and comparing the correlation measure with the computational expression to determine the time offset and the frequency offset.

A method of estimating the DC offset and the phase offset for a radio receiver operable in a digital passband transmission system, the method comprising; sampling a received radio signal at the symbol rate of the transmission system to produce a set of data samples, processing each data sample in the set in order to determine a received signal point in signal space for each data sample, determining an associated constellation point in signal space for each received signal point, calculating the DC offset and the phase offset which minimises, for the set of data samples, the sum of the square of the random errors between each received signal point and its associated constellation point.

Signal offset elimination

A signal receiver which processes a pulse modulated signal comprises a filter which has a greater gain at half the pulse frequency of the pulse modulated signal than at a lower frequency. This helps to reduce intersymbol interference by enhancing components of the input signal that have pulses of alternating sign.
