A subterranean tool that is self contained for actuation can be run into a desired location on an automatic set mode controlled by a timer. If a problem develops in getting the tool to the desired location in time a magnetic field created by permanent or electro-magnets can be brought to bear on the tool to stop the timer before the tool actuates. Once the tool is subsequently positioned at the desired location another magnetic field can be brought to bear near the tool to set it. Alternatively, the tool can be run to the desired location without activation with the timer and then the magnetic field can be brought to the tool to set it. The magnetic field can be lowered to the tool with wireline or can be dropped or pumped past the tool to actuate the tool. Optionally the field can be generated from within an object that ultimately lands on a seat to provide a backup way to set the tool using tubing pressure.

Remote manipulation and control of subterranean tools

The present invention generally relates to a non-elastomeric cement through tubing retrievable safety valve configured to control fluid flow through a production tubing string. In one aspect, a valve for use in a wellbore is provided. The valve includes a tubular body. The valve further includes a flow tube having a bore therethrough, wherein the flow tube is disposed in the tubular body to form an annular area therebetween. The valve further includes a flapper movable between an open position and a closed position in response to the movement of the flow tube. Additionally, the valve includes a sealing system constructed and arranged to substantially isolate the annular area from the bore, thereby substantially eliminating the potential of contaminants in the bore from entering into the annular area. In another aspect, a method of controlling fluid in a wellbore is provided.

Non-elastomer cement through tubing retrievable safety valve

A subsurface safety valve is first provided. The safety valve generally comprises a tubular housing, an isolation sleeve disposed within an inner diameter of the tubular housing, with the isolation sleeve and the tubular body forming an annular area there between, a flow tube movably disposed along a portion of the annular area, and a flapper. The flapper is pivotally movable between an open position and a closed position in response to longitudinal movement of the flow tube in order to open and close the valve. Preferably, the annular area is isolated from an inner diameter of the isolation sleeve in the open position. A method is also provided that allows for a cementing operation to be performed through an open safety valve.

Cement-through, tubing retrievable safety valve

A subsurface safety valve assembly for controlling fluid flow in a wellbore. In one embodiment, the subsurface safety valve assembly includes a tubular member having a longitudinal bore extending therethrough, a flapper removably connected to the tubular member. The flapper is configured to pivot against the tubular member between an open position and a closed position. The subsurface safety valve assembly further includes a flow tube disposed inside the tubular member and a shear sleeve having an upper end and a lower end. The upper end of the shear sleeve is positioned against a lower end of the flow tube to form a first seal between the upper end of the shear sleeve and the lower end of the flow tube.
