A system for providing an alert to an occupant of a vehicle may include one or more processors and a memory. The memory may store a free space detection module, a target detection module, a path prediction module, an activation threshold module, and an alert module. The modules include instructions that cause the one or more processors to determine one or more dimensions of a free space located adjacent to a side of the vehicle, determine one or more dimensions of one or more targets, determine one or more predicted paths of one or more targets, selectively adjust an activation threshold for providing an alert according to the one or more predicted paths, and activate the alert to inform the occupant of a hazard associated with the one or more targets according to whether the one or more predicted paths satisfies the activation threshold.

Systems and methods for providing a warning to an occupant of a vehicle

System, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to improving alerts to a passenger about hazards when exiting a subject vehicle. In one embodiment, a method includes, in response to identifying a target in a surrounding environment of the subject vehicle, estimating a target path of the target. The method includes selectively adjusting an activation threshold for providing an alert according to a curvature of the target path. The method includes activating the alert to inform the passenger of a hazard associated with the target according to whether the target path satisfies the activation threshold.

Systems and methods for adapting activation of alerts according to curvature of a target path

System, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to alerting a passenger about hazards when exiting a subject vehicle. In one embodiment, a method includes identifying an initial target and a subsequent target according to sensor data about a surrounding environment of the subject vehicle. The method includes, in response to determining that the initial target satisfies an alert threshold, activating an initial alert for a defined time to inform the passenger of a hazard associated with the initial target and the passenger exiting the subject vehicle into a path of the initial target. The method includes extending the defined time responsive to the subsequent target satisfying the alert threshold and a timing threshold that defines a cool-down period between activating separate alerts.
