Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices that can provide protected use of user-related information to applications, for generating user-specific outputs. The protected access may allow an application to process the user-related information within a processing environment of a processor that is separate from a primary processor of an electronic device. Within that processing environment, the application can utilize the user-related information to generate a user-specific output from the device. However, the application is prevented from extricating the user-related information, and information derived from the user-related information, from that processing environment.

A handheld video game controller is operable in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mode to allow for sending controller input data to a target BLE device in a manner that bypasses any operating system (OS) restrictions that might otherwise be imposed on game controller input. When operating in the BLE mode, the handheld video game controller pairs (establishes a radio link) with a BLE device executing a client application used for video game streaming. During gameplay, the video game executes on a host computer and the player provides user input to the game controller to control an aspect of the video game. In response to such user input, the game controller sends controller input data to the BLE device via a radio of the game controller. The player may switch between operating the game controller in BLE mode and receiver mode using input gestures on the game controller.

A system, apparatus, and method for processing or correcting metadata used to characterize content such as images, video, books, or music, where that metadata may be provided by a community of users or other source. The metadata may be searched as part of a process of identifying and accessing content of interest to a user or of sharing content among users of a network. The metadata is typically a string or strings of characters that is submitted by a community, so that the accuracy of specific data cannot be guaranteed and consistent formats and unambiguous descriptions may not be used by all members of the community.

A system, apparatus, and method to assist in the discovery of music or other content by members of a social network. The present invention permits network members to network together and share information about their music collections and listening habits with a processing platform and with each other. The processing platform processes music library content and playback related data to produce similarity and compatibility measures between artists (that is, an artist-to-artist measure) and between network members (that is, a network member-to-network member measure). By combining the content and playback related data with filtering mechanisms, recommendation techniques (which may be based on the calculated measures), and set membership concepts, the present invention provides network members of the network with tools to discover artists and/or songs that are likely to be of interest to them.

An architecture is provided that enables an accessibility aid to directly access and manipulate user interface elements of an application program programmatically. Moreover, such access and manipulation occurs in an application-independent manner, so that an accessibility aid utilizing the architecture can access any application program that conforms to the architecture, without the accessibility aid needing any prior knowledge of the application program or its user interface elements. User interface elements typically have both a visual representation displayed on the video display and an implementation, which is the code and data implementing the user interface element. The architecture provides an accessibility aid with direct access to the implementation of user interface elements, thus enabling the accessibility aid to both examine various characteristics of the user interface element and manipulate these characteristics, which may affect its visual representation.

A remote procedure call marshaling architecture provides remote procedure call interoperability between computers having arbitrary native data format pointer sizes not conforming to an on-wire multicanonical data representation of the remote procedure calls. The architecture includes an interface description language compiler having a code path generic to effecting marshaling of data structures containing non-conformant pointers. When compiled to run on a computing platform having a native, non-conformant pointer size, the code path is automatically configured to effect marshaling of data structure containing pointers of the computing platform's native pointer size.

A server application associated with a document provides a document object with a print interface to support programmatic document printing. A client application interacts with the document object through the print interface to control printing. The print interface supports progress monitoring and print cancellation during printing using a call back interface of the client program. The print interface also supports opaquely conveying document-specific print options, so that the client program can perform subsequent print operations with the same or similar document object using the same print options without the client program manipulating the print options. The document object also has a print preview interface which supports programmatic print previewing.

A method and system for transparently executing code using a surrogate process is provided. In a preferred embodiment, the underlying system provides a surrogate program that can execute server dynamic-link libraries. When a client program wishes to access an object of a sharable class or a class factory object, the client program requests a service control manager to execute the server code for the sharable class. In response, the service control manager determines from a registration database whether the server code is available in the form of a server executable or a server dynamic-link library. If the server code is implemented as a server dynamic-link library, the service control manager either returns the location of the server dynamic-link library to the client program to be run in the execution context of the client program or the service control manager launches the surrogate program and requests it to load the server dynamic-link library, thereby isolating the server dynamic-link library from the client program execution context. When the surrogate process is launched, the surrogate process loads the requested server dynamic-link library and instantiates class factory objects corresponding to the sharable classes implemented by the server dynamic-link library. In one embodiment, multiple server dynamic-link libraries can be loaded within the same surrogate process. According to this embodiment, when the client program requests access to an object of a sharable class or to a class factory object, the service control manager determines whether the server code that implements the object can be loaded in a surrogate process that is already executing or whether a new surrogate process needs to be launched. Once the server dynamic-link library is loaded in the surrogate process and a reference to a server object returned to the client program, the client program can communicate with the server code in the same manner as if the server code had been loaded into the execution context of the client program.
