An assembly can include a first radial compressor wheel that has a rotational axis and that includes a hub surface; a second radial compressor wheel that comprises a hub surface; and an annular baffle disposed at least in part between the hub surfaces wherein the annular baffle an outer edge and a substantially parabolic portion that extends to a tip portion, where the tip portion includes opposing sides that converge radially inwardly to a blunt end.

A turbocharger for an internal combustion engine or fuel cell includes a compressor having a liquid-cooled backplate through which a liquid coolant is circulated. The backplate reduces compressor outlet temperature, thereby reducing the cooling load on the intercooler for the engine, and enabling a reduction in charge air temperature entering the engine air inlet manifold. The compressor can include a serial two-stage compressor, in which case the backplate serves as a divider between the two impellers. In another variation, a turboexpander is combined on the same shaft with a single-stage compressor having the liquid-cooled backplate. Pressurized air from the compressor drives the turbine wheel of the turboexpander, expanding and reducing the temperature of the air before being fed to the engine.

An assembly can include an exhaust gas turbine housing that includes an inner wall and an outer wall that define a first exhaust gas channel and a second exhaust gas channel to a turbine wheel space where the inner wall includes an inner wall end at the turbine wheel space and the outer wall includes an outer wall end at the turbine wheel space; a first adjustable divider vane disposed adjacent to the inner wall end; a second adjustable divider vane disposed adjacent to the outer wall end; and at least one set of adjustable variable geometry nozzle vanes that define nozzle throats that direct flow of exhaust gas from one of the exhaust gas channels to the turbine wheel space.
