The presently disclosed subject matter is generally directed to a packaging film constructed from water-dispersible and/or biodegradable compositions. Particularly, the disclosed film comprises a first layer constructed from one or more water-dispersible materials, such as water-dispersible paper. The film further comprises a second layer constructed from one or more biodegradable materials, such as poly(hydroxyalkanoate). The first and second layers can be constructed to form a packaging material used to enclose a wide variety of products, including liquids and moisture-sensitive solids. Advantageously, the disclosed film (and associated packaging materials) are dissolvable in water and/or biodegrade when exposed to landfill conditions and/or water.

Water-dispersible and biodegradable films for the packaging of liquids and moisture-sensitive materials

A composite assembly useful for resisting the penetration of projectiles. The composite assembly comprises a plurality of ballistic fabric layers and a plurality of distinct films. The plurality of distinct films is adjacent the plurality of ballistic fabric layers. Each distinct film of the plurality of distinct films comprises thermoplastic polymer. Each distinct film of the plurality of distinct films has an elongational strength index of at least 800 psi.

Ballistic-resistant composite assembly

As a first aspect, the present invention is directed to a process for making a heat-shrinkable annular film, comprising: (A) extruding an annular extrudate downward from an annular die; (B) quenching the annular extrudate by applying a quenching liquid to the annular extrudate; (C) reheating the extrudate to an orientation temperature of from 130&#xb0; F. to 210&#xb0; F., resulting in a reheated annular extrudate; and (D) orienting the reheated annular extrudate while the reheated annular extrudate is in the solid state, the orientation being carried out with a total orientation factor of at least 2, so that the resulting oriented, heat-shrinkable film has a total free shrink at 185&#xb0; F. of at least 10 percent. The extrudate comprises at least one semi-crystalline polyamide selected from the group consisting of: (i) polyamide 6, (ii) polyamide 66, (iii) polyamide 6/66, and (iv) polyamide 6/12. The semi-crystalline polyamide makes up at least 5 volume percent of the annular extrudate. At least 50% of the quenching liquid cascades down the annular extrudate for a distance of at least 2 inches. The quenching liquid makes initial contact with the annular extrudate within 0.1 to 8 inches of the annular die.

Process for making shrink film comprising rapidly-quenched semi-crystalline polyamide

A multilayer, heat-shrinkable film contains at least one semi-crystalline polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyamide 6, polyamide 66, polyamide 6/66, and polyamide 6/12. The film may have a total semi-crystalline polyamide content of at least 35 volume percent, based on total film volume, and a total free shrink at 185&#xb0; F. of at least 35 percent. The film may have an FTIR Transmission Absorbance A/Aratio of up to 1.65. The film may be a retortable film, capable of being used in a process for preparing a retorted packaged product. A process for making a heat-shrinkable annular film containing the semi-crystalline polyamide comprises extruding an annular extrudate downward from an annular die, quenching the annular extrudate by applying a quenching liquid to the annular extrudate, reheating the extrudate to an orientation temperature, and orienting the reheated annular extrudate while the reheated annular extrudate is in the solid state, the orientation being carried out with a total orientation factor of at least 2, to produce a film having a total free shrink at 185&#xb0; F. of at least 10 percent.

Cycloolefinic polymer compositions exhibiting an advantageous balance of dimensional stability, improved impact resistance and superior optical properties are provided. The cycloolefinic polymer compositions of the invention generally include at least one cycloolefinic polymer and an effective amount of an elastomeric copolymer having an aromatic vinyl content of from 14 to 39 weight percent. The cycloolefinic polymer compositions may be incorporated into a variety of products, including multilayer films.

A method for triggering an oxygen scavenging composition for use in packaging an oxygen sensitive article includes the steps of providing an oxygen scavenging composition comprising an oxidizable organic compound and, optionally, a transition metal catalyst, and exposing the composition to a source of pulsed light wherein each pulse has a duration of between 1 microsecond and 1 millisecond, a frequency of between 0.1 to 100 Hertz, and a total intensity of at least 350 mW/cmso that each pulse provides the composition with a dose of UV light of at least 0.1 J/cmso as to provide a triggered composition. The triggered composition can be applied to an article so as to provide an oxygen scavenging package. An apparatus and packaging system are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for triggering oxygen scavenging composition with pulsed light

An article of manufacture includes an oxygen scavenger and poly(lactic acid). The article can be in the form of a film, coating, gasket, liner, insert, sealant, or fibrous matte. A film includes at least one layer including an oxygen scavenger, and at least one layer including poly(lactic acid). A package can be made from the film for enclosing an oxygen-sensitive artice such as food. The poly(lactic acid) blocks the migration of odor causing byproducts of the oxygen scavenging process. A method includes providing a film including at least one layer including an oxygen scavenger; and at least one layer including the poly(lactic acid); and exposing the film to actinic radiation. A method for reducing migration of organoleptically significant compounds is also disclosed.

An irradiated multilayer film has a first layer and a second layer. The first layer is an outer heat seal layer containing a blend of a highly branched homogeneous polymer and a semicrystalline polymer. The highly branched homogeneous polymer has at least 40 branches per 1000 methylene groups, an M/Mless than 3.0, and a density of less than 0.89 g/cc. The highly branched homogeneous polymer is present in an amount of from about 1 to 50 weight percent, based on layer weight. The semicrystalline polyolefin has a density of at least 0.90 g/cc. The semicrystalline polyolefin is present in an amount of from about 60 to 99 weight percent, based on total layer weight. The second layer contains a thermoplastic polymer in a crosslinked polymer network. A process for making a packaging article includes coextruding the first and second layers, irradiating the resulting multilayer film, and thereafter heat sealing the first layer to itself or another component of the packaging article.

A method for triggering an oxygen scavenging component of a container for packaging an oxygen sensitive material includes the steps of providing a container defining an internal space and having an internal oxygen scavenging component including an oxidizable organic compound, exposing the oxygen scavenging component to a source of actinic radiation, positioned within said internal space, at a wavelength, intensity, and residence time so as to provide a dose of actinic radiation sufficient to activate the oxygen scavenging component, and packaging an oxygen sensitive material in the internal space of the container whereby the oxygen scavenging component scavenges the oxygen from the internal space of the container. An apparatus and packaging system are also disclosed.
