Inline document collaboration workflows are provided. When a user receives an electronic communication that includes an attached content item, the receiving user may select the attached content item and cause the attached content item to be displayed in an immersive view in proximity to an electronic communication pane in which an electronic communication may be conducted about any topic including the content item that is displayed in proximity to the electronic communication pane. During editing of a content item, an electronic communication may be generated from a user interface in which the content item is being generated, or alternatively a new content item may be generated out of an electronic communications user interface.

Generating content items out of an electronic communication workflow

Described herein are systems and methods for transporting an electronic communication that includes one or more attachments efficiently by sending the electronic communication with a smaller-sized (e.g., lower resolution) representational element of each attachment and subsequently replacing each representational element with a higher resolution attachment thumbnail of the attachment. The high resolution attachment thumbnail is produced in an asynchronous process during or after the transportation of the attachment(s) and the electronic communication. After the high resolution attachment thumbnail(s) is generated, at least one representational element in the electronic communication may be replaced with a corresponding HR attachment thumbnail.

Electronic communication-based storage of content items to support multiple workflows is provided. When an attached content item is received with an electronic communication, a receiving user may select the attached content item for review and editing in an immersive view pane that may be launched adjacent to or in proximity to an electronic mail viewing pane. When the received content item is edited, a copy of the edited content item is temporarily stored with the electronic communication with which the content item was received at an associated electronic communication server. When the receiving user then desires to dispose of the edited content item, for example, by replying back to the sending user with the edited content item as an attachment, the edited content item may be retrieved from the electronic communication server automatically for attachment to the responsive communication.

Electronic communication-based storage of documents to support multiple workflows

An adaptive layout and workflow engine. The adaptive layout and workflow engine allows various applications to dynamically render scaled views of content based on the characteristics of the display on the device being used to consume the content. The adaptive layout and workflow engine may select an appropriate view of the content to render based on the size, resolution, or aspect ratio of the display. The rendered size of the content and/or the user interface of the content application is evaluated relative to the characteristics of the display. Embodiments may provide different controls via the user interfaces based on the characteristics of the display and/or content. The adaptive layout and workflow engine may provide customized work flows via the user interface to improve the user experience depending on the display capabilities of the device used to consume the content.

Immersive document interaction with device-aware scaling

A system for identifying attributes associated with content of an e-mail message and alerting a user includes a client device programmed to allow a user to create an e-mail message including at least one recipient and a message content, a server programmed to check an attribute of the e-mail message, and to send the e-mail message, and one or more information stores in communication with the server, the information stores including information about the e-mail message. The server is programmed to query the information stores to obtain information about the e-mail message as the message is being composed by the user, and the server sends a mail tip to the client regarding the e-mail message. The client is programmed to provide the mail tip to the user, the mail tip being formatted and positioned by the client so that it is integrated within a header section of the e-mail message.

Pre-send evaluation of E-mail communications

Automatic uploading of electronic communication attachments to a collaborative storage location for enabling efficient co-authoring among a group of users is provided. When an electronic communication item is received that contains an attached content item, a user may select the content item for review and/or editing. A communication (e.g., a responsive email message) may be automatically created and may include an attachment pointer to direct recipients of the communication to the location at which the edited content item will be stored at a collaborative group storage location. The communication may also include a posting for notifying recipients of the communication that the associated content item has been edited and by whom the content item was edited. Recipients of the communication may then locate the edited content item and may begin reviewing and/or editing the stored content item in a collaborative co-authoring environment.

Collaborative co-authoring via an electronic user interface

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and software for facilitating collaboration within message environments. In an implementation, a message system receives a request to send on behalf of a sender a message having an attachment. In response to the request, the message system generates a collaborative version of the attachment within a location associated with the sender. The collaborative version of the attachment may be modified to reflect updates initiated on behalf of recipients of the message.

Attachment collaboration within message environments

Automatically sending configuration information from a trusted network to a perimeter network. Master servers residing in the trusted network are adapted for administering a distributed directory service containing configuration information. Edge servers residing in the perimeter network are adapted for using a local directory service local to each edge server. Edge-connected bridgehead servers residing in the trusted network are adapted for replicating the configuration information from the trusted network to the perimeter network. Replicating the configuration information to the perimeter network by trusted servers acquiring leases on edge servers is also disclosed.

Updating configuration information to a perimeter network

Propagating messaging preferences of one or more users from a recipient mailbox to a perimeter network administering e-mail content blocking and routing. A content filtering application located outside a trusted network receives messaging preferences information from within the trusted network regarding the mail recipients. This messaging preferences information may be utilized to allow certain pre-authorized messages from particular senders to bypass content filtering. Moreover, the messaging preferences information may be hashed to further protect the information on the perimeter network and to speed in review and comparison of the messaging preferences information. In addition, other types of user-specific information may be propagated to the perimeter network for use with other applications other than messaging.
