An optical proximity sensor includes an optical path extender that extends an optical path length of the optical proximity sensor without a corresponding extension of a geometric path length of the optical proximity sensor. The optical path extender may be a high-refractive index material positioned along the optical path through the optical proximity sensor. The optical path extender may include one or more redirection features configured to change a direction of the light traveling within the optical proximity sensor. The optical path extender may include a photonic component configured to simulate an extension of the geometric path within an optical proximity sensor by applying a momentum-dependent transfer function to the light traveling through it.

A fiber is laser is pumped by radiation from a plurality of diode-laser bars which are wavelength-locked by a single feedback mirror in combination with a single band-pass filter. The locked wavelength of the plurality of diode-laser bars is tunable by tilt-tuning the band-pass filter.

The application discloses an optical isolator having an input and an output, the optical isolator comprising a phase retardation plate positioned at the input, and an optical rotator positioned between the phase-retardation plate and the output, the isolator comprising a Faraday rotator positioned between a first polarizer and a second polarizer. The application also discloses a process comprising rotating a polarization of an optical signal using a phase retardation plate, and following the rotation of the polarization of the optical signal using a phase retardation plate, further rotating the polarization of the optical signal using an optical rotator.

A variable attenuator employs a shutter element that is inserted into the path of a beam of radiation. The shutter element comprises a transparent substrate with an opaque layer formed on top of the substrate. The opaque layer forms a pattern in the shape of dots on one part of the substrate and in the shape of a solid layer with holes therein on another part of the substrate. The pattern of holes and dots are such that the radiation transmission function of the element varies as a smooth linear function with the length of the shutter element. Therefore, by inserting the shutter element in a direction along its length into the path of the radiation beam, the amount of attenuation of the beam can be accurately controlled.
