The present invention is directed to an oral active agent delivery system and method for delivering discrete units of an active agent formulation to a patient. An active agent formulation chamber containing the active agent formulation and having a fluid passing active agent formulation retainer is placed at a first end into a fluid and at a second end into a patient's mouth. The active agent is delivered when the patient sips on the second end of the chamber.

A dry-state iontophoretic drug delivery device (10, 70, 80) is provided. The device has drug and electrolyte reservoirs (15, 16) which are initially in a non-hydrated condition. A liquid-containing pouch (21, 22) is provided. In certain embodiments the liquid is contained in breakable capsules within the pouch. Water or other liquid can be released from the capsules in the pouch by squeezing or flexing the pouches (21,22). Alternatively, the liquid can be released from the pouches (21,22) using pouch piercing pins (36,37). The liquid released from the pouches (21,22) hydrates the drug and electrolyte reservoirs (15, 16) and activates the device. In another embodiment, the device (20, 20a) has liquid-containing gel layers (31,32) which are initially separated from their respective electrode assemblies (8, 9). Liquid-wicking pathways (27,28) are provided to carry the liquid from the gel layers (31,32) to the drug and electrolyte layers (15, 16).

Iontophoretic delivery device and method of hydrating same

The invention herein pertains to methods and materials for producing a nicotine maintenance pouch. Laminates comprising a nicotine barrier layer and a nicotine degradation agent barrier layer are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the nicotine barrier layer comprises a nitrile rubber modified acrylonitrilemethyl acrylate copolymer. An especially preferred nicotine barrier material comprises, by weight percent, 75% acrylonitrile, and 25% methyl acrylate with 10% butadiene (AN-MA/B). The nicotine degradation agent barrier layer is preferably aluminum foil. In an especially preferred embodiment, the laminate comprises a layer of AN-MA/B adhered to a layer of aluminum foil, which in turn is adhered to a layer of paper stock. Pouches comprising a self-sealed nicotine barrier layer and a nicotine degradation agent barrier layer are disclosed. These pouches are preferably formed from the laminates above. A method for production of pouches comprises: (a) providing a laminate including a self-sealable nicotine barrier layer and a nicotine degradation agent barrier layer; and (b) sealing the self-sealable nicotine barrier layer to enclose a nicotine device.

An agent dispenser of the fluid imbibing type having a flexible bag within a membrane and in which a wicking or wetting device is in contact with the outer surface of the membrane to keep such outer surface wet at all times for all attitudes of a containment vessel housing the bag and the membrane. The wicking device is in the form of a fabric tube, such as a stretch knit fabric, or a preformed hydrophilic polymeric sleeve, which can be mounted on the outer surface of the membrane and remain in contact with it so long as there is any liquid in the containment vessel. Since the amount of water drawn by the wicking device is controlled by the membrane porosity and the amount of a solute composition in an intermediate layer between the bag and the membrane, the wicking device provides for a continuous controlled delivery of agent from the inner bag of the dispenser.
