An actuator comprising: a motor comprising a housing and a drive shaft, the motor arranged to rotate the drive shaft relative to the housing about a drive shaft axis; a first torque transfer device comprising a first drive member on the drive shaft and a first driven member on a second shaft, the first drive member being arranged to transfer torque to the first driven member, such that the first torque transfer device is arranged to transfer torque from the drive shaft to the second shaft, the second shaft being rotatable about a second shaft axis spaced from the drive shaft axis; and an output torque transfer device comprising an output drive member on the second shaft and an output driven member, the output drive member being arranged to transfer torque to the output driven member, such that the output driven member rotates about an output axis; wherein a torque ratio of the output torque transfer device is smaller than or equal to a torque ratio of the first torque transfer device.

An actuator comprising: a motor having a housing and a drive shaft, the motor arranged to rotate the drive shaft relative to the housing about a drive shaft axis; a first torque transfer device arranged to transfer torque from the drive shaft to a second shaft, the second shaft being rotatable about a second shaft axis parallel to and radially spaced from the drive shaft axis; and an output torque transfer device arranged to transfer torque from the second shaft to the housing of the motor; wherein, upon rotation of the drive shaft relative to the motor housing, the housing of the motor is arranged to rotate relative to the position of the second shaft axis.

A tandem-wing unmanned aircraft system (UAS) includes forward and aft wings mounted to the fuselage by frangible spar elements, the forward wings in a shoulder-wing configuration and the aft wings in a low-wing configuration. The forward and aft wings may incorporate fill-span multifunctional control surfaces on their trailing edges. The wing design prevents interference with airflow over the fuselage into a tail-mounted ducted propeller assembly, which pivots to provide vectored thrust. A nose compartment at the nose end of the fuselage may include a forward-mounted camera with a hemispherical field of view, the nose camera protected by transparent exterior panels. A ventral cargo compartment mounted amidships may include a ventral camera gimbal-mounted to provide an overhead perspective; the ventral camera may be gimbal-mounted for articulation along multiple rotational axes to provide additional views of the UAS exterior.

The invention disclosed herein integrates several technological concepts: novel three-dimensional accretive manufacturing mechanisms and processes; combinations of fiber materials with plastics, typically thermoplastics, in accretive manufacturing (three-dimensional printing, for example); position-awareness for manufacturing control systems; and computer-aided design optimization processes with novel feedbacks.
