A system for the resilience of an electric submersible pumping system to a transient power interruption includes a power backup connected to the variable speed drive of the pumping system. A method for controlling the electric submersible pump during the transient power interruption includes connecting a variable speed drive to a power source, charging one or more rechargeable batteries within the power backup, and connecting the power backup to the variable speed drive. The method continues with the steps of operating the motor with the variable speed drive, detecting a disruption in AC power from the power source to the variable speed drive, and applying power from the power backup to the variable speed drive to operate the motor during the transient interruption in electrical power.

System and method for managing transient power disruptions on ESP motor drives

Systems and methods for determining the resistance of a power cable of an ESP. The nameplate resistance of the motor is determined prior to installation of the ESP in the well, and the temperature is determined for a point in the well at which the motor will be positioned. The downhole temperature and nameplate resistance are used to calculate an initial downhole resistance of the motor. After the ESP is installed, but before operation of the ESP is initiated, the electric drive for the system generates a measurement voltage and applies the measurement voltage to the power cable and motor. The corresponding current is then measured and is used to calculate the resistance of the string (the combined power cable and motor). The calculated initial downhole resistance of the motor is then subtracted from the resistance of the string to obtain the resistance of the power cable.

Systems and methods for determining resistance of a power cable connected to a downhole motor

Systems and methods for operating a linear motor (e.g., for an ESP), where the motor's mover moves in a reciprocating motion within a bore of the stator. Hard stops are located at the ends of the bore. The motor has a first set of sensors in the stator positioned proximate to the bore. When the mover moves in the bore, the sensors produce corresponding output signals, except when the mover is in a position near, but not in contact with a hard stop. While the sensors produce output signals, the motor is driven in a first direction toward the hard stop. When the sensors stop producing the output signals, the mover has reached the first position, and the motor is controlled to reverse the direction of the mover.

Systems and methods for operating a linear motor to prevent impacts with hard stops

Systems and methods for operating linear motors, and for determining whether a linear motor has reached the end of its power and return strokes. In one embodiment, an electric drive controller of an ESP system monitors position signals received from the system's linear motor and determines transition time differentials, transition counts from the beginning of a stroke, elapsed stroke times and related parameters. If predetermined conditions relating to these parameters are met, the controller determines that the linear motor's mover has reached the end of its stroke. The controller therefore reverses the phase order of the drive's output power and thereby reverses the direction of the mover.
