A method includes heating a glass preform having a plurality of glass layers and drawing the glass preform in a distal direction to form a drawn glass sheet extending distally from the glass preform and having the plurality of glass layers. The drawn glass sheet is thinner than the glass preform. The drawn glass sheet can be rolled onto a collection spool. At least a portion of a glass layer can be removed from the drawn glass sheet. An exemplary glass sheet includes a first glass layer, a second glass layer adjacent to the first glass layer, and a thickness of at most about 0.1 mm. An exemplary ion exchanged glass sheet includes a thickness of at most about 0.1 mm and a surface layer that is under a compressive stress and extends into an interior of the glass sheet to a depth of layer.

Thin glass sheet and system and method for forming the same

An aluminoborosilicate glass includes alkaline earth oxides and is substantially free of alkali oxides. The glass may be fusion formable and may be useful as a substrate or other article, such as with consumer and commercial electronic devices.

Aluminoborosilicate glass substantially free of alkali oxides

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition having an average core coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and a clad layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition having an average clad coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) that is less than the CTEsuch that the clad layer is in compression and the core layer is in tension. A compressive stress of the clad layer increases with increasing distance from the outer surface of the clad layer, transitions to a minimum tensile stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the clad layer, and a magnitude of the tensile stress increases continuously to a maximum tensile stress in the core layer. Other stress profiles, and methods of preparing laminated glass articles are also disclosed.

Glass laminates having determined stress profiles and methods of making the same

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition, and a cladding layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition. A stress of the cladding layer increases with increasing distance from an outer surface of the cladding layer from a compressive stress to a tensile stress, transitions to a compressive stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the cladding layer, and increases with increasing distance from the interface region to a center of the core layer from the compressive stress to a tensile stress.

Glass laminate with buried stress spikes to arrest cracks and methods of making the same

A glass container for storing pharmaceutical formulations may include a glass body formed from a Type IA or Type IB glass composition according to ASTM Standard E438-92(2011). The glass body may include a wall portion with an inner surface and an outer surface, a heel portion and a floor portion, wherein the inner surface of the glass container is formed by the inner surface of the glass body. The glass body may include at least a class A2 base resistance or better according to ISO 695, at least a type HGB2 hydrolytic resistance or better according to ISO 719 and Type 1 chemical durability according to USP <660>. The glass container does not comprise a boron-rich layer on the inner surface of the glass body in as formed condition.

Glass containers with delamination resistance and improved damage tolerance

A coated glass pharmaceutical package includes a glass body having a Type 1 chemical durability according to USP 660, at least a class A2 base resistance or better according to ISO 695, and at least a type HGB2 hydrolytic resistance or better according to ISO 719, the glass body having an interior surface and an exterior surface and a wall extending therebetween. A lubricous coating having a thickness of less than or equal to 90 nm may be positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body but not on any portion of the interior surface. The portion of the coated glass package with the lubricous coating comprises a coefficient of friction that is at least 20% less than an uncoated glass package and the coefficient of friction does not increase by more than 30% after undergoing a depyrogenation cycle including exposure to a temperature of 250° C. for a time period of 30 minutes. A horizontal compression strength of the coated glass package is at least 10% greater than an uncoated glass package and the horizontal compression strength is not reduced by more than 20% after undergoing the depyrogenation cycle including exposure to a temperature of 250° C. for a time period of 30 minutes and then being abraded. The lubricous coating comprises a polymer.

Glass containers with improved strength and improved damage tolerance

A tinted glass composition and glass article including the same, the composition including: about 45 mol % to about 80 mol % SiO; about 6 mol % to about 22 mol % AlO; 0 mol % to about 25 mol % BO; about 7 mol % to about 25 mol % of at least one alkaline earth oxide selected from MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, and combinations thereof, about 0.5 mol % to about 20 mol % CuO; 0 mol % to about 6 mol % SnO, SnO, or a combination thereof, 0 mol % to about 1.0 mol % C; 0 mol % to about 5 mol % LaO; and 0 mol % to about 10 mol % PbO, and that is substantially free of alkali metal.

Tinted aluminosilicate glass compositions and glass articles including same preliminary class

A method of making a glass sheet comprises laminating a high CTE core glass to a low CTE clad glass at high temperatures and allowing the laminate to cool creating compressive stress in the clad glass, and then ion exchanging the laminate to increase the compressive stress in the outer near surface regions of the clad glass. The core glass may include ions that exchange with ion in the clad glass to increase the compressive stress in inner surface regions of the clad glass adjacent to the clad glass/core glass interfaces. The glass laminate may be formed and laminated using a fusion forming and laminating process and fusion formable and ion exchangeable glass compositions.

Laminated and ion-exchanged strengthened glass laminates

A glass element having a thickness from 25 &#x3bc;m to 125 &#x3bc;m, a first primary surface, a second primary surface, and a compressive stress region extending from the first primary surface to a first depth, the region defined by a compressive stress GI of at least about 100 MPa at the first primary surface. Further, the glass element has a stress profile such that it does not fail when it is subject to 200,000 cycles of bending to a target bend radius of from 1 mm to 20 mm, by the parallel plate method. Still further, the glass element has a puncture resistance of greater than about 1.5 kgf when the first primary surface of the glass element is loaded with a tungsten carbide ball having a diameter of 1.5 mm.

Bendable glass stack assemblies, articles and methods of making the same

According to one embodiment, a glass-ceramic composition may include from about 60 mol. % to about 75 mol. % SiO; from about 5 mol. % to about 10 mol. % AlO; from about 2 mol. % to about 20 mol. % alkali oxide RO, the alkali oxide RO including LiO and NaO; and from 0 mol. % to about 5 mol. % alkaline earth oxide RO, the alkaline earth oxide RO including MgO. A ratio of AlO(mol. %) to the sum of (RO (mol. %)+RO (mol. %)) may be less than 1 in the glass-ceramic composition. A major crystalline phase of the glass-ceramic composition may be LiSiO. A liquidus viscosity of the glass-ceramic composition may be greater than 35 kP. The glass-ceramic composition may be used to form the glass clad layer(s) of a laminated glass article.

Glass-ceramic compositions and laminated glass articles incorporating the same

A tinted glass composition and glass article including the same, the composition including: about 45 mol % to about 80 mol % SiO; about 6 mol % to about 22 mol % AlO; 0 mol % to about 25 mol % BO; about 7 mol % to about 25 mol % of at least one alkaline earth oxide selected from MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, and combinations thereof; about 0.5 mol % to about 20 mol % CuO; 0 mol % to about 6 mol % SnO, SnO, or a combination thereof; 0 mol % to about 1.0 mol % C; 0 mol % to about 5 mol % LaO; and 0 mol % to about 10 mol % PbO, and that is substantially free of alkali metal.

Tinted aluminosilicate glass compositions and glass articles including same

A lighting unit includes a glass laminate structure including a base layer formed from a first glass composition with a refractive index nand a surface layer fused to a surface of the base layer and formed from a second glass composition with a refractive index n. The surface layer includes a high refractive index region with a refractive index nand a low refractive index region with a refractive index n. nand nsatisfy the equation |n&#x2212;n&#x2265;0.001, nis greater than or equal to n1, and nis less than n. The high refractive index region is optically coupled to the base layer such that at least a portion of light propagating through the base layer leaks out of the base layer and into the high refractive index region. A display device or a luminaire can include the lighting unit.

Lighting unit with laminate structure

Alkali-doped boroaluminosilicate glasses are provided. The glasses include the network formers SiO, BO, and AlO. The glass may, in some embodiments, have a Young's modulus of less than about 65 GPa and/or a coefficient of thermal expansion of less than about 40&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C. The glass may be used as a cover glass for electronic devices, a color filter substrate, a thin film transistor substrate, or an outer clad layer for a glass laminate.

Alkali-doped and alkali-free boroaluminosilicate glass

A glass article includes a glass core layer and a glass cladding layer adjacent to the core layer. A coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the core layer is greater than a CTE of the cladding layer. The core layer has a tensile stress, and the cladding layer has a compressive stress. A retained strength of the glass article is a strength determined after abrasion of an outer surface of the glass article with 1 mL of 90 grit SiC particles for 5 seconds at an abrasion pressure, and a ratio of the retained strength at an abrasion pressure of 25 psi to the retained strength at an abrasion pressure of 5 psi is at least about 0.3.
