Some embodiments of the present invention provides a method of preparing a thermoformed article composed of polylactic acid that includes the steps of providing a foam sheet comprising polylactic acid having a D-lactic acid stereo-isomer content that is about 3 mole % or less, exposing the sheet to a temperature of at least about 190&#xb0; C., and forming the heated sheet in a mold at a mold temperature that is at least about 50&#xb0; C. and for a length of time to form a thermoformed article having a PLA crystalline content of at least about 10%. Surprisingly, it has been discovered that heat resistant thermoformed articles can be prepared in accordance with embodiments of the invention wherein the time required for forming the foam sheet into a molded article is less than about 10 seconds.

Process for preparing a heat resistant polylactic acid foamed article

The presently disclosed subject matter relates generally to method of producing thermoplastic foam from a blend of polyolefin and acrylated epoxidized fatty acid using a phsyical blowing agent. Specifically, the presently disclosed subject matter includes embodiments wherein the acrylated epoxidized fatty acid is added to the polyolefin resin in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 10%, based on the total weight of the resin. The presently disclosed subject matter also includes the foam produced by the disclosed method.

Method of foaming polyolefin using acrylated epoxidized fatty acid and foam produced therefrom

The invention is directed to a floor underlayment material comprising a film sheet having an inner surface attached to a foam sheet and an outer surface including a plurality of recesses formed therein. The plurality of recesses define one or more fluid pathways through which a fluid may migrate across the outer surface of the film layer. The underlayment material may be used in a flooring system to help prevent or limit the accumulation of a fluid between the floor and the subfloor. In one embodiment, the underlayment material may be disposed between a subfloor and floor with the outer surface of the film layer being disposed adjacent to the underside of the floor. The one or more fluid pathways provide channels through which a fluid such as moisture vapor may escape from within a flooring system and thereby reduce the accumulation of moisture in the flooring system.

Floor underlayment

An expanded cellular ethylenic polymer product is provided from an irradiated, noncross-linked linear ethylenic polymer. Linear ethylenic polymers can be irradiated at ambient conditions sufficient to introduce branching in the polymer in the absence of detectable cross-linking as indicated by the absence of gels. The irradiated linear ethylenic polymer is compatible with highly branched low density polyethylene and, when mixed therewith, produces a resin having a single broad based melting temperature range as determined by direct scanning calorimetry, which indicates that the polymers in the mixture have similar crystallization behavior suitable for producing low density foams by extrusion foaming. The linear polymers can be obtained from recycled shrink wrap film. Low densities of from 0.7 to less than 4 pcf can be achieved. The foams typically have improved tear resistance as compared to previous products prepared from low density polyethylene, at comparable low densities.

Compatible linear and branched ethylenic polymers and foams therefrom

An extruded thin sheet foam is disclosed prepared from a polyolefin resin in which the blowing agent comprises a blend of from about 1 to 25% by weight of carbon dioxide and the balance of C3 to C4 VOCs. Thin foam sheets produced with the blowing agent age about twice as fast as foams prepared with VOCs, are remarkably stable, and can be produced at high throughputs.

A foam and method for making such foam includes a blend of a low density polyethylene and a higher density ethylene polymer. The ethylene polymer has a density ranging from greater than 0.94 to about 0.97 grams/cubic centimeter and a melt flow index of greater than 10 g/10 minutes, and may include at least one member selected from ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer, ethylene homopolymer, and blends thereof.
